Keep the shift key on all the time

I want a way to keep the Shift key depressed all the time no matter what I do. Can someone tell me how to do this step by step. I've tried the sticky keys deal and as soon as I press another key it turns off. This is not what I want. Using Windows 7 Pro.

My CAPS LOCK key accomplishes this. Then, my SHIFT key because an un-caps key for typing. I have to tap my CAPS LOCK key again to take it 'off'.

Does not work for me. Using a Logitech K120 keyboard.

How about a small C/G clamp or spring clip, Mr Shouty ;) ?

It's a bit steam punk but it worked for me when I needed a quick fix for it

A better answer might be to connect your keyboard to a different PC, same OS/SP level, then install the software for it, reboot and test it.

Though it won't fix your problem, it should give an indication of where the problems lies, we can work on it from there (or you could RMA/replace it, should it prove be a hardware issue).

Shouldn't there be some kind of free software utility that has this feature? What every happened to the shift lock key I remember from years ago?

I wouldn't pile any more software on until you've figured out where the problem is, it's likely to make things worse rather than better.

Is the Logitech a standard (no software needed for multimedia/gaming keys/combo's) keyboard?

Yes. It's a cheap keyboard but I liked its key action so I purchased it. No CD came with it. It's model K120

I have the same keyboard, and other Logitechs. My CAPS LOCK keys all work as they've worked across every keyboard.

I'm not sure I understand the reasons for this - are you saying your K120 keyboard's CAPS LOCK does not work? Or is it just not working in the way your typing style prefers?

(Keyboard Software is usually offering Remapping Functions only - "Make my Down Cursor into a Shoot or Page Down function". I don't think I've ever seen a "Force All Keys To Be Capped All The Time" option. If so, then there'd still be a range of keys you'd probably want to be UnCapped (like the Number keys), so the software would need to offer a Range of Keystrokes for All-Capping Functions.)

These inexpensive Logitechs have one nice feature - for another $12-15, I get the same 'feel' across dozens even hundreds of units. I like that predictability.

I just wish the CAPS LOCK key would include its LED "on" light ON the key itself, instead of all the way across the keyboard on its far-side. I'd like the beat those peabrained keyboard designers for clumping those LEDs together instead of putting them on the correct keys like they used to do. Has this 'clumping' really saved the world's economy? It's now sooooo much cheaper?!! Does this save the rainforest? (And if so - does that mean keyboards really DO grow on trees?!!)

The issue isn't with my Caps Lock key. The issue is getting my Shift key to say on without having to hold down the Shift key constantly. I need to use the Shift key to get an underscore ( _ )

    I'm confused.

Your original statement of "keep the Shift key depressed all the time no matter what I do" IS what the CAPS LOCK key does. For a certain range of keys - the alpha keys.

Now, I'm thinking you're telling us that you ONLY want the Underscore-Hyphen key to be 'SHIFT ON" all the time.

Not all the other keys "all the time no matter what I do".

For me, that's why God invented my left pinkie finger. I didn't realize it for the first few years I typed, but now I've come to understand His Design. Left pinkie, Right ring finger. I finally got it.

I guess 'remapping' could occur, changing the Hyphen (standard) key into the Underscore (lower, with Hyphen as the Upper function).

Instead of Shouting, it sounds like you actually want Underscores instead of Spaces.

If all you want is to be able to type the underscore _ without having to hit shift, try this program

You probably don't want to map to the spacebar but another key not used very often will serve in a pinch.

I knew there had to be a better answer. Thank you!

You are correct. I don't want to map the underscore to my spacebar. I also want a way to run off this functionality when I'm done using it. From what I can tell AutoHotkey has to be running for this to work so it's perfect for me.

In this case I have no choice but to use software because this keyboard doesn't have the functionality I need. I figured that Windows 7 would be able to handle my simple request. I was wrong. Thanks for making the effort to try and help me. Much appreciated.
