I apologize in advance if I'm posting this in the wrong forum.

When installing Picasa2, I get the following error:

Picasa2.exe file is linked to missing export Kernel32.DLL:MoveFileWith ProgressW.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

    Oh yuck!

I don't think this error is going to be a fun one to fix... kernel32.dll is a very essential file to windows itself. I recommend that you backup your data ASAP, just to be on the safe side.

Let's try the easy things first before we panic, though. This might not be a problem with kernel32.dll at all!

    Try this:

    1. Download Dependency Walker
    2. Open Dependency Walker, and use it to open c:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll

Dependency walker will now profile this dll, and show you every file it tries to open, and what program code it expects to find there. (The problems are listed in red). Hopefully, it is ANOTHER file causing this problem, and we won't have to do any major Windows overhauls. Post back and let us know!

Thank you for your speedy response!

Kernel32.dll is not in "system32." When I couldn't find it there, I did a search-and-find and located it in c:\windows\system.

Please advise. I have downloaded Dependency Walker, but I have not used it yet... pending your response.

kernel32.dll is a hidden and protected operating system file. (told you it was important ;) ) Here's what we'll have to do to see it:

    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Select the 'Tools' menu
    3. Select 'Folder Options'
    4. Select the 'View' tab
    5. Scroll down and select the radio button next to 'Show Hidden Files And Folders'
    6. Scroll down further, and uncheck the box next to 'Hide Protected Operating System Files'
    7. Apply your settings

It worries me that this file is where it is....

Yes, I do have a "system32" folder. Kernel32.dll is not located there. It's located at c:\windows\system.

The following items are in the "system32" folder...

    1. A folder titled DRIVERS
    2. desktop.ini
    3. folder.htt

That's all that's in that folder.

    I'm using:

    Microsoft Windows 98
    4.10.1998

    LOL!

I'll be back with you shortly.

Just so you know, this WAS a community computer until today when the monitor part of my Gateway Allinone computer went out. Aaarrrgh. Looks like I've jumped out of the frying pan and into the freakin' fire.

The radio button next to "show all files" was already selected.

The two buttons you listed in your previous post are not options for me.

EDIT: http://google.picasa.com/ says that windows 98 IS supported.... carry on lol

Let me rephrase my original post... I'm able to download the program. I get the error when I click on it to use it.

Do I need to be searching for my Windows 98 disk, or will just any do? This thing's so dang old, I probably cannot find the one that's associated with the computer.

    Aargh!

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    I'm back.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Picasa2 according to your directions. I still get the same error message. I am now getting an additional message that reads:

c:\ProgramFiles\Picasa2\Picasa2.exe A device attached to the system is not functioning

    The original error was:

Picasa2.exe file is linked to missing Esport KERNEL32.DLL:MoveFileWith ProgressW.

    HELP!!!

    (please and thank you)

Do you have the Win 98 cd?

If so, run Registry Checker and System File Checker.

I have a 98 CD but it's not the original. I'll give it a go and see if that makes a difference. Cross yer fingers for me.

    What am I looking for?

The Registry check found no errors.

The system file checker gives me multiple options of things to do. What do I do?

I don't know what I'm doing with the "System File Checker"

It should tell you if the file and what it is might be corrupted and to replace it from the original installation disk. I think it is the second option.

Just put your cd in and in the "Restore from" box browse to your cd-rom drive and let it extract the file from the cd.

  24. VLBarnhill

Do I do that with EVERYTHING it finds, or just look for the KERNEL32.DLL file?

  25. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

Let it try and replace any it finds.

dag nab it... it wants me to specify the location that contains the file i want to restore and the destination for the file... the CD is not specific enough, or it's simply not finding what it needs...

i'm stuck on the first file... clspack.exe

I have to leave now. But I will be back tomorrow to pick up where we're leaving off here.

The "file" is on your 98 cd, it is in your CD-ROM drive, so that is the location that contains the file. The destination should be what is listed.

Good luck Vickie and let us know. :)

Picasa 2.0 does support 98, but 2.5 DOES NOT support 98.

My question is, what version did the OP download?

MG only has the 2.5 version.

    Try this instead:

    or

I hope this clear things up!!! :)

Steve, I know that the "CD contains the file." When I told it to check the CD, it then listed all the folders on the CD... requiring me to make a more specific selection. For some reason, a general search of the CD was not an option.

The Picasa issue is resolved but I'm still left thinking there's unresolved issues pertaining to the KERNEL32.DLL error message. Should I forget about it and not borrow trouble?

Steve, other geeks and ops, thanks for all your help.

I'd expect the version of Picassa you were using earlier was expecting to find a newer version of kernel32.dll, and erroring out when it didn't. I would not pursue a fix unless you receive further related problems. From the sounds of it, kernel32.dll wasn't the issue in the first place.
