    Hi,

I am not sure if this is a hardware or software issue , so apologies if I am on the wrong forum.
The keyboard on my laptop has a couple of keys which do not give the assigned character. For instance @ is made by pressing uppercase 2.
I have checked the language setting of the keyboard and it is set to English UK.
I found some advice which said go to Tools and select Customize and then Keyboard and select Customize keyboard and then Reset all.
The only problem is I cant locate the Tools menu that contains the Customize menu.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Regards Alex.

Uppercase 2 is correct on my keyboard, however I am using a laptop, so perhaps the suggested solution will work ...

Hi Drizzles, Any idea where I find this Tools menu?

Sounds as if, like me, it's a UK keyboard you want, where uppercase 2 is ".

Try Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Keyboards and Languages > Change Keyboard. (That's for Vista but it will be similar if you are on XP).

Remove any US keyboard and if necessary add English - United Kingdom keyboard.

Or is that what you already tried?

Do you use Vista or XP?

    Can you clarify a little?

Am I right in assuming you have a UK keyboard on your laptop, i.e. the @ is on shifted ' but to get @ you are having to use shifted 2, and that you have removed any US keyboard in Control Panel?

    HI Earthling,

    Yes you have got it.
It is an English Keyboard and is set to English UK in the controle .
However in order to type @ I have to use uppercase 2 button.
Also there are other wrong keys.

    Regards Alex

One of the other wrong keys being " I guess?

It is still using a US keyboard layout, so can you confirm that you have deleted any US language keyboard in Control Panel - not just not selected it but actually deleted it?

    Dear Earthling,

Sorry about the delay, I had to cut the grass !!!!
There is no delete option available to get rid of the US English.
Do you know how I could do that ?

    Regards Alex

Well I'm entirely sure about XP cuz I have Vista but in Vista, in Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, the Keyboards and Languages tab, and then select Change Keyboards, then Add a new Keyboard and make sure it is the Keyboard layout suited to your keyboard, then remove the other one.

I assume its something similar in XP.

    Hi Drizzles,

In XP there is a scroll through list of languages to choose from. You can select and apply a language but there is no option to delete a language and I can't find a way to do this.

Right, I've booted an old XP system. In Regional and Language Options click the Languages tab, Details button. Change the language and then reboot.

    That will fix it.

    Hi Drizzle and Earthling,

    Problem sorted !!!!
By right clicking on the tool bar I was then able to select the Tool bars option which gives a Language Bar option. Selecting this brought an icon up in the Tool bar. Left clicking this brings up a few options including Settings. In Settings it was possible to select the Keyboard language which was as you said set for US. A simple change to UK and all is well.
    Thanks for your time.

    Regards Alex.

Yes, it's just an alternative route to the same Control Panel settings I gave above.

    Well found!
