Keyboard and Mouse disabled after Combofix

Hello and thanks in advance for any advice!

I was getting a pop-up within Firefox that Malwarebytes seemed unable to remove. I ran Combofix which found and removed some sort of rootkit. Following the reboot process I found both my keyboard and mouse disabled.

I am capable of hitting F8 during the reboot process to choose from start up options, but the keyboard fails to respond any further once I make a selection like Safe Mode. I have attempted to change ports for the keyboard and mouse but still am failing at getting any result.

Also to note, my CD drive is broken so I don't think I can be running any boot discs.

    Any thoughts?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Well it is rather difficult to do anything when your keyboard and mouse do not work in any boot mode and you also have no working CD drive to attempt repairs from.

    • What version of Windows ?
    • Is this a laptop or desktop PC?
      • If desktop, do you have the ability/nowledge to remove the hard disk and put it into another PC as a slave drive?
      • Are you using USB ports in the front of the PC or in the rear of the PC?
    • Also check your BIOS to see if there is a Legacy USB Support type mode that you can select?

    Windows XP

    Desktop PC

No, I do not have the ability to remove any drives
I have tried both PS/2 and USB ports in the back.

I don't see that as an option. What I see is:
Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging, Enable VGA Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Directory Services Restore Mode, Debugging Mode, Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start Windows Normally, Reboot, Return to OS Choices Menu

That is not the BIOS. That is just your boot options screen. You need to figure out how to enter your BIOS. There are many ways that vendors use. Sometimes it is the Delete key, sometimes it is the ESC key, sometimes it is F1 or F2.

However have you tried running in both Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command prompt to see what happens?

Sorry - I don't know quite THAT much.

Got into the BIOS and I can see the line Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options). From there I can see the options "Sound, Network Interface Controller, Mouse Port, USB Emulation, USB Controller, PCI Slots, Serial Port 1, Parallel Port, Diskette Interface, Primary Video Controller, Onboard Video Buffer". Am I in the right part?

Sounds like the right area. Observe what everything is set to now so that you can put it back to that state if necessary and see if you can change optins for the USB Controller, Mouse, or keyboard and see what happens.

Also if this does not help, test in Safe Mode with Network and with Command Prompt. But do read the below all talking about the subject of Legacy support and why.

    I see:

    Sound - On
    Network Interface Controller - On
    Mouse Port - On
    USB Emulation - On
    USB Controller - On
    PCI Slots - Enabled
    Serial Port 1 - Auto
    Parallel Port - <Enter>
    Diskette Interface - Auto
    Primary Video Controller - Auto
Onboard Video Buffer - 1 MB

    Does anything look incorrect there?

    Thanks again.

    Not that I can see.

Since you have no abilty to use your keyboard and your mouse, and also your CD drive does not work, the only options we could offer would
    1. Try the Debugging Mode option you saw in your boot menu
    2. Try making some form of USB boot device to see if this will work
    3. Have you find a friend with more PC skills that can help you remove your hard disk to plug it into another PC in an attempt to find out what ComboFix removed and if it can be restore.
    4. See you have a Recovery Partition on your hard disk that your PC vendor installed and use it to reurn your PC to factory ship state. This will however removed anything you put on it since you first received. Thus you will loose all of your personal data.
