Keyboard crashes system, driver is corrupt

Windows XP. I've just finished installing the second keyboard (the first was PS/2, the new one USB) and I still can't access my computer since even touching the keys causes my system to lock up, requiring a hard boot to restore. There is a consistent message when I examine the device driver. It says:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.

I have been able to do a few things with the cursor, and those include running Zone Labs, Lavasoft, and spybot. I ran a hijackthis file also and submitted it to one of the instant analysis sites, but I think I should stop at this point and see if anyone here has any ideas?

    Thanks!

may also be well worth if you can either boot to the normal GUI or boot to safe mode, checking the device manager for yellow ! marks around mouse or USB controllers, you can then either update driver or delete and reboot as XP will find and install the device driver again, may just be a duff install.

Although I don't have the use of the keyboard, I have been doing some copy and paste commands via email. Is there any other way to get the computer to reboot in safe mode without pressing f8? I can get into system configuration utility by pasting msconfig, but that won't get me to the safe mode, right? wrong?

And yes, the yellow exclamation point appears under keyboard, but not the mouse. I mention that because the latest keyboard I have installed USB instead of ps/2 - it is one of those combination wireless mouse/keyboard products from micro innovations with one cd to install both from simultaneously. The mouse works fine.

If you can get into msconfig, select the radial button "Diagnostic Startup". Click ok, then reboot.

In msconfig, you can also select the BOOT.INI tab and check the /SAFEBOOT box. That'll get you into safe mode when you restart. (you will be prompted to restart by a dialogue box when you exit msconfig)

*edit: also, if it's one of those combo keyboard/mouse deals, you usually get a usb to ps/2 adapter for the keyboard. Why not pop that on until you get the drivers working?

if after following the steps above about booting to safe/diagnostic mode and that doesnt change the problem, a yellow ! mark in device manager is normally associated with the driver not installed correctly ( nothing you've done it just happens sometimes ) and one way I would follow is to delete the keyboard from the device manager > reboot and install the driver again.

also have a look on the manufacturers site for an updated driver pack for your keyboard mouse.
