Am currently working on an older P4 IBM machine for a friend.
Hard drive is completely clear with a fresh format.
Wanting to install Linux Mint on this machine, but the keyboard isn't working.
I know for a fact that the keyboard is OK as it is the one I always use.
Have tried several others with the same results.
Will not let me put the CD drive as first bootable device. Hard drive is ahead of it, so I get "Operating System not found" message.
Do not have a USB keyboard to try.
    Suggestions?

Man, how do I say this without sounding like a jerk...

Get a USB keyboard. Charge him the 20 bucks for it. :)

Try and install motherboard drivers if at all possible as this is most likely the problem, assuming you did not check device manager for ! errors.

He is already planning on getting one.
The PS2 works enough that I can hit F1 to get to BIOS, but unresponsive after that.
Could not check Device Manager since no OS found, would go no further.
How do you install drivers when there is no OS or folder for them?

Misunderstood, thought the OS was installed. Wish I had more but since you are talking about booting and it is failing, I doubt there is much else you can do. I assume you checked the BIOS, maybe even set the BIOS back to default to see if that works? Pretty last ditch desperate move, but it won't hurt anything.

Can press F1 to get to BIOS, but the directional buttons are unresponsive.
Like that on all keyboards I have tried.
Assuming that the PS2 plug-in on the tower is defective on at least one pin since some work.

    Update.
    USB keyboard did the trick.
OS installed and friend is a happy camper.

    Case closed.
