I ran into this same/similar problem with my new XP Pro system. What was happening was the number lock would go off when the sys. was rebooted. If this is your situation, and you prefer to have the numbers locked until you unlock them, you have to go into the registry to change the option. Let me know if you want to do this via this thread and I'll give you the instructions (which I got from Dell).

Cheers for help (and not laughing) Id prefer to have the Num Lock off so I can use the numbers rather than the numbers above the letters. If you could help me there id appreciate it very much

When you put the number lock on, I believe, you can use that key pay to type nos. With it off, hence, you will get nothing when pushing the number keys. In any event, if your lock goes off after reboot, and you wish the lock to stay on after reboot, you must change the option in your registry as follows:

On your desktop, click start, then run. In the box type regedit. In the registry, click on the plus on HKEY CURRENT USER, then click on the Control Panel plus. Then highlight keyboard and move to the right side and right click on "initialkeyboardindicators" and then click "modify". Here a box will open up. The number in the "Value data" section should be 2 to leave the number lock locked until you physically unlock it. Obviously, don't make any other changes to your registry. Hope this helps.
