    Greetings:
I'm running win2000. My keyboard in IE 6 suddenly was completely remapped 2 days ago (not the numluck issue). Keyboard is properly mapped in all other programs. Also, firefox suddenly would not start- received a crash message, and an indication that no log was able to be created. Same crash when attempting to run in firefox safe mode.
When logging in as another user- both IE 6 and firefox work properly.
When logging in as same user in safe mode- same problems.
    I have:
    - uninstalled and reinstalled IE6
    - uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox 3
    - uninstalled Firefox 3 and installed Firefox 2
    - tried running firefox 3 with a new profile- no add ons
thanks very much for your help
    Don

You logs are clean. Since your problems do not appear to be related to malware, I'm going to move this thread to the Software Forum. You should provide the exact word for word crash messages and error codes.

    Thanks.

Here is the error message I receive when I try to open Firefox:

    "Mozilla Crash Reporter
Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.
Unfortunately the crash reporter is unable to submit a crash report.
Details: The application did not leave a crash dump file."

No error messages in IE6, just a remapped keyboard.

    Other, perhaps unrelated details:
    - the same day, on another pc on my network, Trend Micro PC-cillin virus scan found "troj_dloade.ako" in my outlook archive.pst file. This was fixed.
    - A couple days prior, on athe troj_dloade.ako machine, MS Word asked if I wanted to save changes to my normal.dot, reminiscent of macro viruses. I said no, closed MSWord, and deleted normal.dot so Word would create a new one. I've scanned all recent docs to no avail.

    thanks for your help

    Thanks Mark.
Tried these troubleshooting suggestions, including renaming firefox.exe, to no avail.
As stated in first post, since firefox will not open in safe mode, i cannot troubleshoot extensions and add-ons.
One interesting thing- when creating a new profile in profile manager, firefox will open into the new profile. However, after being closed, firefox will return the same error message when restarted, even though I've told profile manager to open directly into the new profile without asking at startup.
    thanks

    thanks Mark.
    gave that a shot.

    Get this message :
    "Windows File Protection
Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.
Insert your Service Pack 4 CD now."

    Do not have SP4 CD.

I cancel and continue through the dialogue, and the scan continues with my W2K cd.

still same issues with firefox and ie6 after reboot.

Somehow during the process of sfc /scannow, or building the slipstream sp4 w2k cd, I jacked up windows. It wouldn't start normally, or in safe mode with networking- it would only start in safe mode. Then, while continuing the process of building the slipstreamed cd, windows completely would not boot.

I booted from the w2k cd, and did a repair installation, now w2k boots properly, but still, same issues with ie6 and firefox.

Finally ran sfc /scannow with the sp4 slipstream cd with no errors.
Still, same ie6 and firefox issues.

I just had a firefox crash and now when I try to restart, I get the same message, which is:

Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts. Unfortunately the crash reporter is unable to
submit a crash report. Details: The application did not leave a crash dump file.

I have re-installed FF (ver 3) but still same thing occurs. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to get FF running again?

I am at a much lower rung on the expertise latter than DonCo, so your kindness in replying is fairly basic terms will be much appreciated. (DonCo, if you are reading this, please advise if you solved your problem and how. thanks.)

Tried everything I could think of but no cigar.

Gave up and installed 3.1 Beta. Foxmarks won't work with this beta yet, but hopefully will catch up soon. In the meantime, there appear to be some interesting new features in 3.1

    Thanks.

    Hi Odyssey:

I was able to fix Firefox by removing all traces of it, then reinstalling. Simply uninstalling firefox was not enough to get rid of whatever was making it crash.

This link explains what to manually delete in addition to the uninstall:
    http://blog.techdreams.org/2007/08/how-to-uninstall-firefox-completely-and.html

If deleting entries in the registry freaks you out, just don't do it. I think it should work anyway.

good luck. my internet explorer is still jacked up, but at least I can browse the net now on this machine.

Strange, isn't it, that a 'total' re-install works when one is staying with the same version and I agree it would seem logical that the profile is the culprit, but my fix was to move to a later version which retained the profile, and the problem went away.
