Keyboard Shift Error

For some reason my laptop has changed it's shift options. When I try to type @ it returns " instead. The @ symbol is now found by using shift+2. I can see by Googling that this is not an unusual problem but the usual solution is to check that the language is set to English (US). My keyboard is already set to English (US) with no other language options installed. Is there somewhere else I should look to get my keyboard back the way it was?

The @ sign is above the 2 on US keyboards so there is nothing unusual about holding down shift and pressing the 2 key to get the ampersand.
The UK variant of the IBM Enhanced keyboard commonly used with personal computers designed for Microsoft Windows differs from the US layout as follows:
Note: @ and " are swapped

So what is above the 2 on the current keyboard you are using? " or @

    Above the 2 I get @.

I don't understand the problem. You have the @ sign above the 2 key. You press Shift and 2 as you type and get the @ sign. That is exactly as expected.

I misunderstood your previous question, the printing on the '2' keycap is " but when I use shift+2 it returns @. If I use shift with the key printed '@' it returns ".

I've changed the keyboard to English (UK) & now everything is back to normal but I had to ask Windows to install English (UK) first. I understand that the default language could somehow change but not how that can happen if only one language is available. Could something have deleted the UK language?

You are totally confused, and confusing us here too.

That's correct. When I first looked at the problem, the only installed language option was English (US). I have now had to install English (UK) & set that as default in order to have the keyboard as it was before. In my last post I was assuming that the (UK) option must have been available for the keyboard to work properly but had somehow been deleted.
