Keyboard suddenly stopped working I had the following msg
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

If you update driver, you get “Windows has determined that the driver software is up to date"

Dell dimension 5150 SP3 Windows XP

I uninstalled Norton security from constant guard. When I restarted the keyboard didn’t work
I unplugged the usb and changed ports
    I ran windows repair /tweaking
Was having problems connecting to internet then uninstalled constant guard and was able to access.
Using osk and <enter>, so hard to type much

Start - Run type this mmc devmgmt.msc - Ok - right click to yellow device - Properties - Details - scroll down the arrow finding Hardware ids - there is a code in the box , we need it ( select all - copy - paste ) the code here :wave

    Hi

In Device Manager look down the list for Human Interface Devices and check for the Keyboard in the list then right click and uninstall it, then unplug the keyboard and plug it in again. Hopefully Windows will install the driver again for it as it may have been corrupted by some 3rd party software.

If this doesn't work then let us know ever device in Device manager that has a yellow ! mark next to its name if any?

I did that (uninstall,} but no change. I also did F12 at boot up and it passed. I think it's best to reinstall windows. Can I still reinstall windows xp and input info w/o keyboard? The problem seems to be OS, not keyboard. I am worried about getting stuck and not being able to complete reinstall.

    Hi

Merged both threads o the same topic into one so all the info we are giving you is not duplicated.

Do you have another keyboard you can try, even borrow one from a friend to test, does that work ok.

What device is the yellow ! next too?
If you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) does your keyboard work ok?

It worked for me to press f8 and choose safe mode, but once windows loads the keyboard goes out.

Ah ok, thanks for the info and maybe the following may help...

Download and install the Chipset Driver from Dell for your model PC HERE and once installed reboot and test the keyboard.

If you do not have another keyboard to test, you cannot sadly know if your keyboard is defective and the issue over a software/driver issue.

So, unless you've done it already then I guess you're going to get a new keyboard or borrow one to try out, eh?

You might try plugging it into a different USB port also.

After reinstalling the OS the keyboard is working just fine. Thanks to everyone for the help!
