For all the people who didn't like my original product (Keyfinder Thing 3) because it needed .Net 2.0, Here is Keyfinder Thing Lite!

Its smaller! (100k) Its Faster! but it doesn't have the features of the full version. Its basic and to the point now and the only dependancy is MSVBM60.dll (The VB6 Runtime that most people have anyway thesedays.)

Currently it doesn't support quite as much software as the original but the rest WILL be added in due course.

There is no website, no documentation, no FAQ.

This version will be updated regularily with new titles (something I think the other products of this genre lack) and isn't targeted specifically at MS products (which the other products of this genre seem to be.)

At this point it is only available on this thread so if you see it anywhere else let me know and i'll go shout at them!

The 'full' version is here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5188

They didn't DO anything lol they DIDN'T do something, they just didn't store the key in the registry, not sure why since its been in the same format since win 98, Theres a rumour that it does work if it was installed AS sp4 (not updated TO sp4) but I have no idea, if it is there then the full version of kft will find it with the search one day, but Im not sure how much truth is even in that and can't even remember where I read it.

Hi all, I'm new in the forum...

I have a problem with the copy serial feature of Keyfinder Thing Lite! seems that only the first serial selected is copied correctly: for example I select Partition Magic 8, click copy and paste into notepad, the serial is copied correctly the I select Registry Mechanic 5 click copy and paste into notepad,
the serial copied is always that of Partition Magic 8.

I like this utility (it is also useful integrated into a Bootable Recovery CD) and any help is really appreciated....

    Regard Gibo.

interesting..... Let me dig out the source and check for you......

Does the serial displayed change when you change items ? (Do you have .net 2.0 ? if so and you need this info urgently you can download the full version)

    Ok I found the problem

VB6 won't let you set the text of the clipboard without dumping anything thats in there first. DOH I forgot that lol

just fixed it, give me 2 minutes to recompiile version 1.03

there is a way in order to contribute to increase the programs supported by Keyfinder Thing Lite! ? ..... even sending a reg file containg dummy registry entries regarding Serial info of some apps...

Sure... send any info like that to me and i'll add it in, lots of programs don't store the info but if you know a program that does and even better have it installed then by all means send me a reg file (preferably renamed to .txt otherwise my spam blocker might eat it) anyone who sends me a reg file and contributes can have their name in the read me and possibly on the site if I ever finish it

    >> I got a couple of written down keys for my Office 2000. that I keep safely locked away. Bazza <<

I've always recommend to co-workers and friends that the best way to "recover" required product serial numbers and keys; is to keep a Word document named something like Serials - Product Keys in your My Documents folder. (An Excel doc is good for this purpose as well).

And then every time you buy or obtain a product that requires a product key (or serial) open the document and copy the number there along with the products full name and version number - if applicable.

Then use something like Backup To EMail 1.0 or perhaps Send To GMail to immediately "right click and send" the document directly to your email address. Both of these products are made by the same company and are very reliable. Consequently, these keys are always immediately available via your e-mail account.

    Good Luck!

  24. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

First up I wouldn't reccomend a word document or an excel document. Whats wrong with a good old text file ? You can open a text file no matter what you have installed, what if you don't have office on your computer? or what if the file is saved in a different version ?

Second if you do need to store the serials lets make sure no one else can access them by putting the text file into an encrypted rar file or some other compression that supports encryption, personally I don't like storing sensitive data in an email either, I have several partitions (12 actually) and I never save user files on the system drive so the files on there will never be accidently removed like a .pst (outlook) file would be. Also I just put a copy on my USB Flash Drive which goes EVERYWHERE with me.

I also keep a copy of them all on a CD locked in the fireproof safe so everythings good!

  25. COMPUABLE

Great idea Matt, regarding the keeping on a text file!

I like Excel myself, but I forgot about text file opening no matter what you have installed. Encryption is always good idea as well. I actually encrypt every document on my computer immediately after I have saved and closed Right click = Encrypt => Done!

As for e-mail, I believe saving anything on an email account (especially encrypted) is a safe as well as reliable method for storage. Certainly there's less chance of losing the info on an email account that say on a backup drive or CD - or of corruption of the material that is stored there in an attachment.

I don't worry much about anyone opening my computer. I use "Lock My PC" which works well. I have it set up so that a .jpeg replica of the Windows boot up shows up right after boot up.

When the program is activated and that .jpeg appears; it looks like a Windows freeze-up on the screen. This fools everyone who tries to open the computer by pressing the on button. They cannot access the computer after that without entering the valid password into the innocuous looking message box that appears after you click any key.

I also use another security program for "safe mode disabling" which then prevents anyone else (but me) from entering in Safe Mode, should they try to access the computer that way. ;)

    Good Luck!

    'safe mode' disabling ?

Wouldn't it just be easier to put passwords on the user accounts and disable the guest account ?

If I caught anyone at work using a JPG as a security measure I think i'd ban them from the network ;)

Whoa! Is using a .jpeg pic at boot up harmful in some way?

Because where I work you can do pretty much do any tweaks or (or add programs) all you want on your own workstation PC - providing two things (1) It does no harm to yours or anyone else’s computer (2) you run it by the company administrator (the primary geek guy at work) prior to making any changes or software additions.

Anyway if it is actually "harmful" in any way; to use a .jpg like I do at start up Matt, let me know, please. Thanks :)

    Good Luck!

@Compuable ....so how do you password protect safe mode?

@Matt ....remind me of the differences between the lite and the full versions.

  30. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

The full version requires .net 2.0 and has features like export to html, export to text, search, has a much nicer gui with the programs found as a sort of windows explorer style with a properties dialog shown on double click etc..

The lite version is as basic as you can get, nothing but the bare essentials and is written in vb6 (mostly api and common controls so no componenets except the basics which most people will have anyway)

    >> It's not harmful as far as I know, I just wouldn't trust its security. <<

Oh, thanks for that reply, Matt really! <wipes cold sweat from forehead> ;)

Seriously my boss is way cool about this subject; but he gets pissed to the max if you install something that does any harm at all afterwards; even if you run it by the company admin geek prior to installing the program or making a tweak.

The actual .jpeg pic itself provides no security whatsoever using the Lock My PC program. After it is initially installed the program itself does all the security; depending upon how the user configures it. For instance, it can be set to block access anytime with a click or whenever you want (i.e. and/or upon boot-up) and you can actually use any .pic you want with no limitations as to the image file formats (.jpg, png, gif, tif, etc).

I only use the faux Windows Boot-Up Screen because I’m quite sure it would likely confuse whoever is trying to access my machine (w/o my permission) via the “on” button on the box. They would likely think the screen was frozen or something. I originally had a .jpeg screen capture of a "Blue Screen" but that attracted way too much attention when I started the PC and someone was walking by. The Windows Boot-Up Screen pic is far less conspicuous.

After that boot up screen appears; anybody without the password would have only two choices available (1) hit any key and keep seeing the "Unlock Password – Enter Password Here" or (2) Restart the computer, see the screen again and continue to repeat step (1) - <lol>

Also the "Unlock Password" password box is simple looking and innocuous. It gives no indication as to what the program is named. No password - No Entry. Period!

I installed it after I left work and went out to the car one day and when I came back to my workstation later (forgot my knapsack) the security guard was playing Windows games or something. He was just a kid and wasn't doing anything crooked or malicious, but it got me to thinking and that's when I decided to install "Lock My PC" at work.

My boss is not geeky all; in fact he hardly uses his computer because his secretary handles all of that. But he cracked up when I showed then this faux Windows Boot-Up Screen setup and liked the idea. Anything that might keep any nosy eyes prying away from access to my files is "all good" to him!

    Good Luck!

    >> @Compuable ....so how do you password protect safe mode? << TimW

To protect safe mode from unauthorized access on my computer; I use a very old (but still very useful) shareware program called "Start Up Pass" The "Safe Mode Protect" feature allows only the administrator to login to the safe mode on windows which is cool.

The version that I use here is pretty old but I still like it a lot. There are so many ways to can confuse the dickens out of any potential intruder with all of its security settings. The only thing I warn people about is that there are so many different and entirely separate tweaks available that it can be confusing to keep track of them.

You can also customize a variety of security settings like locking interrupt keys and boot menus at system boot up and a desk lock feature that locks the Windows Desktop at startup, when you are away or idling. The tool can also automatically shut down the computer if login authentication fails in a user specified number of tries. Other security features consist of the Locking Disk 2 Disk Transfer, Dos Mode Protect, Desk Lock, Real time protection as well as Safe Mode Protect.

I actually got it quite a while back (around summer of 2001 or 02, I think) from Mediacom Softwares for like 10 bucks with a coupon. However, it currently costs like 20-30 bucks depending on where you find it on the web.

I think it’s the same developer/company that currently makes or sells Spyware Doctor; but I’m not sure if they still author, update or even sell Start Up Pass anymore. It’s still available on many sites though but I think there’s no support available anymore; so if anyone here decides to try out; make sure that you know what you’re doing before using it.

    Good Luck!

Found this ...shows you I'm having a brain f*rt day:

How to Password Protect Safe Mode in Windows Xp
In Windows XP, even if you set passwords on your accounts, an office snoop can use Safe Mode to get in. You can protect your computer through the following steps:

    Steps
    Print this page for reference.
Restart the computer. Repeatedly press the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options screen appears. Select the Safe Mode option using the up and down arrow keys, then press the ENTER key. Choose "Windows XP Home/Professional", depending on the version of the operating system. Press ENTER. Shortly, the welcome screen should show.
Log in as "Administrator". Click Yes to not use System Restore Mode.
Click the Start button. Choose Run and type in "control userpasswords" (without the quotes). Click OK.
Select the "Administrator" user. Click Change my password. Enter a new password in the corresponding text boxes. Click OK. Write this password down and store it in a secure place. I do not recommend that a password hint be used.
Close the User Accounts window and restart Windows.

    Tips
You can further improve your security by enabling the BIOS password protection and changing your boot order to use floppies and CDs after the hard disk. Note that this does not prevent attacks which involve removing the hard drive or clearing the CMOS settings. Read your computer manual before performing any of these changes.
If removing hard disks and/or clearing CMOS memory is a concern, Windows's file encryption should be used, especially for strictly confidential documents.

    Warnings
The Administrator password may be needed if you need to remove viruses or spyware. Therefore, you must record this password.
This is not a substitute for Windows Update. You must keep Windows current to avoid Internet worms.

    >> Found this ...shows you I'm having a brain f*rt day: How to Password Protect Safe Mode in Windows Xp << TimW

Great Tip there Tim! I love boot-up tips and it's really great when they can be done manually and not having to rely on another program clamoring for resources at startup! ;)

I've also heard many users report that they use the Local Security Policy on a computer to lock many things down. By using Start => Run => gpedit.msc there is reportedly a wide variety of stuff that users can lock down. I've never actually used this method but I've heard about in some forums from time to time.

Eons ago I used to have an old WinGuard program installed to lock my home computer from boot-up and a few other things. It was a freebie that I got with an old computer that I used for testing software. At first I really liked it until I tried some others that were easier to configure and did not run down the resources quite as much.

This old version was very basic but useful; but I do not recommend any of the ‘new and improved’ WinGuard programs versions. The company currently adds dialers and other crapola that set off alarms when you’re using any competent Anti-virus program. Also, the owners of the company (or new owners, I’m not really sure, but I think the original company may have been sold…) are really creeps when you contact them for any support whatsoever.

An employee at my job site has a newer version installed and really regrets updating the WinGuard program and not saving the old .exe. She had all sorts of problems with the new version and got ZERO assistance from the person who responded to her inquiry.

She told me that she paid like $25 bucks for it and only received two support letter 'responses' from that company after writing to them several times and showed them to me... One was almost unreadable [written like a teen in a chatroom: "i don kno what yer problem is!" etc] and the other one was not even a support response, but an advertisement for an upcoming version.

    Good Luck!

OK they must have changed the registry location. It looks in the 2 known registry locations for the windows key and if it finds neither it will tell you and quit.

    Code:
        WindowsKey = modMain.GetMSRegistryKey("SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows NT\CurrentVersion")
        If WindowsKey <> "" Then
            Values(0) = WindowsKey
        Else
            WindowsKey = modMain.GetMSRegistryKey("SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\CurrentVersion")
            If WindowsKey <> "" Then
                Values(0) = WindowsKey
            Else
MsgBox ("There doesn't seem to be a valid windows key installed... Odd that... hmmm..")
                Unload Me

matt, thanks for the on-going revisions (and additions) to KeyfinderLite version.

I guess you are spending all your time on the Lite version, due to it's popularity, small download (and no need to for .NET).

Just checked out your FAQ from your site and it refers to the Full version 3.1.6 only (and probably needs the latest list of additions added, if you can get the time).

Maybe you should plug both versions, or are you going to concentrate on the smaller Lite version?
Is there any need for the Full version?

No criticism intended, just curious. ;) :) Bazza
