kill xp popups?

I've been using XP for about two weeks now but still have no clue how to turn off the taskbar popups- 'update your computer', 'you are connected at..', blow your nose'.

Apologize in advance if this has been recently covered.

 

when you say taskbar popups, do you mean the ones that come up in the bottom right, or are they messenger popups with like a faint background and text? you could get yourself a decent popup blocker or SP2?

 

They are refering to Balloon tips that come from the taskbar. To disable them you need to edit the registry. (Remember it is always good to have a full backup for attempting registry changes)

Click Start > Run > type regedit > press enter.
Go to the following location in regedit using the folder list on the left
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Then find or create the key below

EnableBalloonTips (0=disavled, 1=enabled)

to Create the key just right click in the white area on the right of regedit > New > DWORD > name it EnableBalloonTips > set Value to 0 to disable or 1 to enable

 

Ahhh, no more nag.
