I have a old computer who's hard drive has probably died. Assuming the drive has any coherent data left and this old computer will let me boot off the CD, how do I set Knoppix up as a temp server to pull stuff off this drive via the network. Is this even possible?

Even if I can't get it off the old computer the know how is worth it. Thanks.

You wanting to do something like file sharing, or an ftp server?

File sharing, so I can move files in mass off of a bad hard drive, assuming it is possible/practical. I'm not even a novice Linux user, so small words and short sentences please.

That may be FTP I'm talking about, thinking about it. Basically the ability to copy a file or folder from one computer to another via the network, hopefully using the recieving computer (that is running in Windows) to initiate the process after the Linux side is set up.

Samba is the protocol used to share to windows. Its not really hard, but to put it into small words...not as easy as it sounds.

I couldnt find a specific Knoppix wiki or how to on it, so try following this. Samba is laregely the same for each distro.
