    Hey Geeks!

I just downloaded Knoppix 3.3. It's a nice (I've heard) newbie friendly version of Linux that you can run straight from the CD drive without installing it on your computer...soz you may try it out and see how it works before you do a full install.

I got it for my ancient laptop (Gateway Solo 2500, Windows98se, 400mhz Celeron, 288 RAM, 6 Gig HD, Linksys Etherfast 10/100 PC card). But, I can't figure out how to set up an internet connection. I found an "ADSL/PPPOE configuration" tool, which asks for things like ISP username and password and such, but once I use that tool, I can't figure out how to connect (like a nice little icon that says "connect to the internet" that uses the info I input into the configuration tool). So, are any of you folks familiar with Knoppix enough to help out?

I posted a comment on the Knoppix forum yesterday, but I have yet to hear back from anyone. So, I figured I'd post something here and see if y'all could maybe help out.

    Thanks a bunch! :)

Yeah, I think it did that auto dectect thing when the computer first booted up with the CD. Everything works (or seems to work) just fine. I just can't figure out which thing I click on to connect! :)

But, I figure this will be an ongoing experiment. I might try to load this thing up on my desktop and see if I can connect there. And I'll surely wait and see if the folks on the Knoppix forum wake up ;) (but, I was noticing a while ago that many of the queries and posts there have tens of views but no replies...strange).

We'll see. Thanks for your quick post!

You haven't mentioned what your current connection is (Unless I mis-read), I'm guessing PPPOE, if so, it's probably going to be annoying, as I've never set up PPP[OE], but know that it can be annoying to set-up :p. To check if some hardware was detected run 'dmesg -a | less', and scroll down until you see it probing your hardware.

Vlad902, I ran that command in the command line, and it froze up the shell. Did I type it in correcet "dmesg(space)-a(space)|(space)less"?

When I hit enter, it just pops up this small white box in the bottom corner of the dialoge box saying "END". I don't know what that means.

    Any ideas?

Also, I am running on a PPPOE...a pc card in the laptop that connects to the ADSL line.

Extremely odd... You typed it correctly, try doing "ls /var/log" and paste the output here.

Can't help you there, never had expierence with setting this up, might want to ask on a Linux based forum as they will have someone who has set this up most likely.

    Hey Vlad902.

I ran the "ls /var/log" command, and I got this (wihich is going to be a pain to type!! :)):

    cups
    daemon.log

    lpr.log
    lvm

    messages
    mysql
    mysql.log
    nessus
    news
    partimage
    ppp-connect-errors
    pppstatus
    samba
    scrollkeeper.log
    sendfile
    setuid.changes

    wwwoffle-upgrade.log
    wwwoffle.log
    xdm.log

None of that stuff means anything to me. But, that's probably cause I'm such a Linux newb. Does it mean anything to you?

BTW, I am posting on a Knoppix forum too, but their replies are few and far between.

    Thanks.

Try doing less /var/log/syslog and see if you get any information about your kernel, and if not /var/log/syslog try /var/log/messages, if not those, I don't know what to say, never had to tackle PPPOE.

    Hello mdowns.
I am a complete newbie to linux and have never tried to configure a PPPoE connection. It was all I could do to get my dial-up going, though once you do such a thing, it tends to get much easier the next time...
I have found some links which MAY be helpful:
    http://tldp.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/index.html

    http://www.roaringpenguin.com/products/rp-pppoe/

    http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html

    http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Net-HOWTO/

I had a friend on cable access that had his connection auto-detected by the knoppix.
I do know that with dial-up access, hardware compatability can be a real deal-killer. Don't know about the adsl thing yet.
I do have some books, will try to give a look later.
    Regards
    Robert
