Kodak EasyShare problems

This dude brought me his PC (Dell XP Home SP2) because he was having problems with the dial-up and Koday EasyShare. I fixed the dial-up lickety-split, but the Kodak software is a nightmare. He had an older version installed that came with an older camera; he bought a new camera and tried to install the new Kodak EasyShare without removing the old one first. I'm not sure if this is where the problem started or not. He said the new one wouldn't install, so he brought it to me. He was right; the new one wouldn't install. So I uninstalled the old one, ran CCleaner on both the HD and reg, rebooted, and tried to install the new one. It installed OK, asked to reboot, and upon loading back to Windows, Kodak EasyShare popped up error after error. So I uninstalled it again using Revo, ran CCleaner again, rebooted and tried to install it again. This time on reboot I got an error "the program has encountered an error and needs to close. Click here for more info". So I clicked here, and this was one of the few times I was actually directed to a download that would fix the problem. So I did that and rebooted as requested. Now when the PC loads to Windows, it says that EasyShare must update the catalog because it's a new version. So when I click 'continue' I get the error that I have attached below. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, done a Windows repair install, spyware scans.... nothing works. There's no help at all on the Kodak web site, and a Google search turned up next to nothing.
    Anybody got any ideas???? H E L P ! ! !:cry

Nope  I didn't even know it existed. I'll try it right now, and I'll post back in about 20-30 minutes and we'll see how it goes.
    THANKS!! (nice and fast response too.... W O W ! ! !)

It's still in mid-reinstall, but I did see a message that popped up saying "files are left over from a previous installation and must be removed before we can continue. Remove the files now?". Of course I said Yes, but the uninstaller should have done that earlier, right?
    :confused
Freekin' PCs.... I swear.... sometimes I just hate 'em LOL

OK.... the re-install finished, I rebooted as requested, again the prompt came up to update the catalog file, and I'm right back where I was!!!! I got the error "EasyShare has encountered an error and needs to close.... click here for more info...." and again I was linked to a download from Kodak, and again I'm installing it, and I'm pretty sure it's not going to work again :cry :banghead I have a CD with an old version of Easy Share, maybe I'll install that and if it works, maybe there's an update-via-the-web option I can use to bring it up to date.... what a major PITA....
Thanks for the help so far muskie! Any other tips?
If anyone else has any input, feel free to post!

I had the same problem a year ago and can't really remember what I did to fix it. (Or if I actually did fix it)
I do know that I ended up removing it, as I think the Easyshare software is a waste of space.

Have you tried uninstalling, running the Kodak Cleaner utility, then doing a reg cleaning looking for Kodak and Easyshare, specifically?

Just had another thought. Search your user folders, common files, program files, and program data files for any leftover folders after doing the above. Anywhere that apps like that tend to save things.
And maybe the Windows Install Cleanup app might help, too.

I was just thinking the same thing. If the owners of this PC weren't such noobs, I recommend that they just dump EasyShare in favor of anything else, but they have almost no capacity to learn anything new, and I guess they've been using EasyShare for years and they're comfortable with it. I have a couple of other tricks up my sleeve... hopefully something will work.

Thanks for the help muskie. If you happen to think of anything, let me know!
    Thanks again :)

I gave up on EasyShare the moment I discovered that my camera was a flash drive. The only feature I haven't found elsewhere on editing is color to B&W, so I still have it on one machine kicking around the house.

    Hi

Unistall any Drivers Kodak has installed for camera if indeed it has already.

Try the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool, and remove anything Kodak, go into Program files folders and do same, then run CCleaner again ... Cleaner and Registry options, then try the install.

:banghead I've tried everything everyone has mentioned, and it still errors out at the exact same place. The install goes fine, but at the very end (after the reboot) it wants to update the "catalog" (whatever that means) and it errors out. I've done in-depth HD searches and removed everything with Kodak and/or Easy Share in the name, this includes stuff in the hidden Application Data folders and other folders like it. Nothing works. Could it be that the pictures on the HD (the only folder with Kodak in the name that I didn't delete) were created with an older version of EasyShare, and for some reason the newer version can't deal with it? I'm going to try to install the older version (v3.3; the newer one is v6.0) and see if maybe I can perform an update to 6.0 or something....

That is a possibility. I remember when I uninstalled it off my wife's PC and then reinstalled (newer version), the pictures showed but were unaccessible and had like a torn image on them. That was using the Easy share software. They were available using Windows photo software.

Well, I installed the older v3.3 and it works beautifully. No errors, it picked up and associated all the pictures, and all is well. I think the problem with this is that their newer camera may not be v3.3 compatible, but you and I both know that digital camera are basically just 'picture-only' thumb drives, and you and I know that we can access the pictures with any software including Windows Explorer, and you and I know that we can open/edit the pictures with any photo app we want (XnView, PhotoMeister, PhotoFiltre, etc).... but that's what you and I know. The owners of the PC don't know that, and from what I know of their PC expertise, explaining this to them and getting them to accept it and implement it are tasks that border on impossibility. So, I may just tell them that v6.0 will not install without a format and reload of the OS (I already tried a safe reload and it didn't work), and that v3.3 is working fine. I will also mention that there are some other great, free photo tools available, and I might even provide some download links to MG, but I think I'm done with this one.

Many thanks to all who offered their help and suggestions, I do appreciate it. :heart

LOL @ you and I know.......
I have had 3 cameras I used to upload pics on this PC. Never installed software for any of them, except Windows drivers. I have only added one app off the discs and that was a photo stitching app. (and probably could find better if I used it more)
And XnView, plus PhotFiltre are a great combo.
