    Hi,

I am a little unsure - is this a networking problem, or Linux?

For the first time I a few months ago succeeded in installing a working (i.e. useful) Linux setup on an old P3/500 computer. Kubuntu 6.10 just installed, connected to the Win2k computer where my wireless Internet connection is. If I have understood things right, the Win2k computer is used as gateway.

After some asking around I found that the full Samba package must be installed for real networking to/from linux.

Well, I got it working, and then I decided that it would be better to have the Linux PC be gateway for Internet. That is, I needed to get the wireless working on the Linux computer.

Following not-so-good advice, I installed KnetworkManager. This led to a rather flaky wired LAN, and no wireless on the Linux computer. So, I decided - remove KnetworkManager.

... and then the Samba network stopped working.

The reason I feel sure this is a Linux problem is this:

The Kubuntu PC is really a removable HD; and I have a win98 HD that just slots into the same IDE controller, and networking is no problem.

As most ideas regarding wireless need Internet connection - or a rather deep knowledge of the Kubuntu distribution - I feel it best to fix the Samba problem first.

When I try accessing the Samba resources, I get a message like "No workgroup found/available", and a suggestion that there is a firewall problem.

... in addition to the fact that Win98 does have no problem from the same place in the network, I also did disable the Kerio firewall protecting my Win2k PC.

    Any ideas???
