KVM Switch, Mouse/Keyboard issues

Hi all. I've run into a problem that has me perplexed. I've installed a KVM switch to be able to use my 20 inch monitor from the Vista desktop with the Win7 laptop, but now the mouse and keyboard seem to be demonically possessed, but only with my main account on the Vista desktop. With any other account it's perfectly fine and the Win7 laptop doesn't show any issues at all.

What's happening is the mouse will randomly freeze where it is, unclick/reclick when dragging and dropping something. The keyboard will randomly skip letters and freeze, only to repeat the last letter it registered you typing somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 or 40 times. This is really annoying with the return key and a real test of your sanity with the delete and backspace keys; the h for example will hhhhhhhh out, then you go to backspace and lose 2 or 3 whole lines of text. Try to retype the text and bbbbbbbb happens not halfway back to where you were 20 seconds before. :***

Computer is an eMachines T3604 w/2 gigs ram and an ATI x550 video card (among other improvements), Vista Home Basic. KVM switch is an ioGear http://www.iogear.com/product/GCS42UW6/ the mouse is a Logitech Trackman Wheel, the Keyboard is a Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 bought new for this KVM switch.

Being a Vista machine it's obviously not a fresh install.

    Thanks for reading

I would lean toward some software glitch.

Log into an account that works and open task manager and write down what is running. Log out then log into your account. When this glitch occurs, open task manager and see what is running. You can eliminate all the processes that were running on the good account because clearly none of those causes the problem.

Post those processes that do not show up in the good account. Maybe we can pinpoint what process is causing the hiccup.

Hi plodr, thanks for the reply. I took your suggestion and checked everything in the Task Manager's Processes tab and I couldn't find anything that was running in one account that wasn't running in the other account. I then did the same thing with the Services tab and I couldn't find any services that were running in one account that weren't running in the other account.

Assuming this, but this issue doesn't happen if your minus the kvm?

You are correct in your assumption.

I actually think I have it somewhat working. I disconnected my broadband modem from the USB port and ran it via ethernet. Now my mouse and keyboard appear to be doing OK, but I need to type out a few pages of text and edit a few images to be sure. Maybe I had too many things plugged into USB ports? Aside from the broadband nothing else was self powered so maybe my power supply couldn't keep up or it was just too many things plugged in to deal with the information. Unfortunately since I have the least expensive broadband from my provider it didn't speed up my upload and download speeds any but I can type away. Thanks for trying guys, this may be one of those things that just makes the symptoms go away but the underlying problem may still exist, I don't know.

Well, as I suspected, disconnecting as much as I could from any USB port helps but the problem still persists. Anybody have any ideas?

I also downloaded USBDeview to take a look at the other USB devices installed on the machine. Uninstalled that crappy little webcam that was rather useless anyways, my kids 3 broken MP3 players and a bunch of other stuff that's not connected to the computer anymore. Nothing, so I uninstalled everything that was USB. Not having a mouse now I went to the cloud and restarted the computer remotely. Some things reinstalled and things are much better, but I still have the issue sometimes.

I've vacuumed the dust bunnies out of the case. I also thought it might be the RAM, so I downloaded memtest.exe and ran it. No errors.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I tried both of those programs but neither really showed me anything that popped out at me as being wrong. Then again I could be staring a problem in the face and not realize it's a problem.

I also went to the Malware Read Me First thread
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
and did all that it said. I still have the logs but since it didn't really come up with viruses I don't know if they'll do any good. But the steps in there about updating Java (I just uninstalled it and will deal with it when I come across a time when I actually need it installed), resetting MSConfig to default, using ComboFix, RootRepeal and MGTools have improved things far more than I have had things running in a while. The mouse is now working just fine as far as I can tell and the keyboard only occasionally repeats key presses.

YES! PLEASE for your own sake start a thread in the Malware forum and attach all logs (it will take you two posts as the attachment limit doesn't let you attach ALL logs to one post).

The logs reveal malware issues that the scans missed, and MGTools isn't a malware removal tool in as much as it is a tool for showing malware that needs to be removed using special means, which the Malware Experts can guide you through.
