More information would be helpful in trying to help you. What OS and which Gateway model are you using?:)

Gateway 2000 GP6 400.Business Computer Built in 1998.Windows 98 Installed all critical updates installed.I just set up this computer for my brother in law installed AVG and Zone alarm.Spyware Blaster and SB Search destroy.Rebooted 5-6 times everthing was looking good and clean.I guess last night it froze up on him and he lost mouse control and had to man reboot. Now on Boot the Gateway splash screen comes up then a black screen with L1 and a blinking cursor.I have had a black screen with a blinking cursor on other computers but no L1 in front of it.Searching for L1 on google it says it is a cache on the Intel Pent 2 chipset. Is this L1 just properitery to the gateway sys?I have never seen a L1 before a blinking cursor.I guess i should run mem test on it.

If this setup has ran sucessfully for a while, then I agree that MemTest would be a good idea, as it does seem that it could be memory or processor related.
