If you are interested in experimenting with open source software in the future you can see how any particular machine deals with that by consulting this list:

    (just a little something FYI)

First Rule: Don't buy a gaming laptop. Big waste of money better spent on a desktop machine if that's what it's intended for.

Always check out the company a little bit before you decide on a laptop.

    Here's some minimum's I would suggest:

2200+ Athlon XP or 1.7Ghz Pentium 4 Mobile
    256MB PC133 Ram
    20GB Hard Drive
CD-RW or DVD Drive or Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon or Any Nvidia Geforce Go card (To taste)
    at least 14" LCD screen
Built in Sound, Speakers, 10/100 Ethernet, Modem

ya don't want a gaming labtop. I am looking at spending about 1500 dolalrs. I also want wireless and bluetooth capabilities. I am heading off to college, so i want to be able to hook into the wireless network and get on the internet. Besides that i just want to listen to music on it and word process. A long battery life would be great to.

    Laptops starting at $999.00!!

Gives you extra money to buy accessories...oooh maybe an iPod.

    Wireless built-in, 1.2Ghz G4 (which is like a 2.4Ghz P4), 30 or 60GB drive, CD/RW-DVD drive or a SuperDrive which is a DVD Burner.
    Excellent quality, great customer service.

A lot of friends have dells, starting from the high end xps and the lower end machines they love them. Or search newegg.com. I used to use tigerdirect but they kept screwing me on prices and shipping. I then switched to newegg and love them.

Dells seem good, actually Panasonic Toughbooks are good too, my friend has had one and he abuses it regularly and its still running!! (he has dropped this thing from 2m up before, all that happened is the floppy drive button popped out).

Only thing againsts Panasonic Toughbook's is their drivers are quite shocking. Not that the Dell ones seem to be any better.

You're not a fan of Apple but your iPod kicks ass...hmmm? Did you know Apple makes the iPod? Anyway......

For Windows laptops, I would say HP or Dell. SONY tends to have very proprietary technology sometimes, so I wouldn't choose SONY.
No idea about Panasonic, but as far as I know Panasonic hasn't been in the laptop business all that long. Plus the toughbook likely costs more than $1500 dollars.

For under $1500, Dell is probably your choice.

    Good Luck.

well you would have to have maximum pc, they tested three of the newest systems and the pc ones spanked the apple computers.

One advantage that I like in my old Gateway Solo 9300 P2/400, is that I can run a permanent hard drive (30 gig fitted as C:\), have a separate swop bay for a floppy drive, or a removable hard drive (10 gig hard drive fitted as D:\) as well as a CD\DVD drive. Yep, 2 hard drives (1 removable) and a CD\DVD drive, all at once.

I would not consider a new laptop that did not have this feature. I think they call it a "twin spindle machine", but not sure of that.

One final thing, if your new machine will run on 1 stick of RAM, make sure that you fit the biggest capacity RAM that will run on your laptop instead of 2 sticks that make up the same capacity. To explain, 1 x 512 mb stick, instead of 2 x 256 sticks. Will cost a little bit more in the first place but will be cheaper in the long run, if, and when, you want to increase RAM. Say you eventually wanted to go to 1 gig of ram, you would have to chuck out the 2 x 256 and buy 2 x 512 or 1 x 1024, instead of just fitting another 1 x 512. Bazza

There are so many dependancies, you said you wanted a computer to "listen to music on it and word process. A long battery life would be great to." That is very general, basically anything could fill that. I am giving you good reliable option. You may be surprised what Apple has to offer.

Apple has been making the iPod for about 2 years, and computers for about 20. What do you suppose that indicates? Sorry, not trying to push this down your throat, but there are many people out there stuck in this myth that PC's are 'better' than Macintoshes, it's just not true, it all depends on what your looking for. You didn't mention Windows, someone else already offered a Linux notebook, which I might add is closer to a Mac OS than Windows will ever be, MacOS is now built over a UNIX operating system. Plus you will get more bang for your buck. The choice is yours. If Windows is what you want, I said earlier, HP or Dell. Good Luck! :)
