    Hey folks,

My internet connection was working fine, then one morning when I started up, it said my LAN cable was unplugged and cannot connect to the internet. I checked it and it is clearly plugged in. I have had this connection working for many months. I can still connect if I use the wireless connection. The other computer in the house still works fine. Any ideas?

    Thanks-
    Jason

It could be any number of things.

Whats your OS? Does the NIC show up in the device manager? Does your router, hub or switch show lights for the socket it's plugged in to? Does your NIC show any lights when plugged in?

I am using windows xp, under network adapters which I think you refer to with NIC I have Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Desktop Adapter and VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter (which is the one having the problem). The router shows the light when I plug it into any of the sockets and the light goes away when I unplug it from my computer.

Maybe making a little headway here. When I change the ethernet adapter connection type from auto-negotiate to anything else it recognizes there is a cable plugged in. However, it is not acquiring a network address. This leaves me with the yellow triangle/black exclamation point: Limited or no connectivity and unable to use the internet.

    Maybe this will help:

Your failing to connect to your DHCP server which is your router.

Try setting a static IP address. Go to "Start" then to "Settings" then "Network Connections" and access the "properties" for the VIA NIC. In the window double click the "TCP/IP" item and there you can set a static IP.

Based on your printout from ipconfig, I would set the IP at something between 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.90. SubNet Mask 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.1.1. That should get you back on line.

Be sure to add the new address to the firewalls on any other computers on your network or you won't be able to access them.

    Thanks, it now says connected.

However, I am not sure where to go about adding ip addresses to firewalls.

What firewall are you running and how many computers are on your network.

I switched it back to auto assign and the problem seems to have worked itself out. Thanks
