Hum it could be shorting out. Does it just disconnect and re connect. Or is it gone form the network connections window completely?

It sometimes tells me i have local access and couple times told me i had no access (yellow exclaimation point).
plus it shouldn't be shorting out my pc is only 5 months old.

Do you have it plugged into a Router or into a modem. You also could be having trouble with your ISP. Does the net work ok on your old pc?

I just had an odd one, might relate to yours, neices PC started going strange, LAN loosing connection, video blanking out. We finally got lucky and the power supply unit finished going out.

    Go figure.
