    hey folks,

I'm looking for help purchasing a new laptop. My old one was custom-designed by CyberPower, and is on its way out. A lot. It has been for months, but now it doesn't boot 60 - 80% of the time (I haven't exactly kept detailed records). So in the event that it can't be saved, I'm looking for something new that isn't also crap, and I turn to you, the internetz, for assistance.

Basically I need something dependable that won't break and won't cost a ton. I wouldn't mind being able to run games, although it's not necessary. I'm not a graphic designer or anything - just a typical 20-year-old who spends a fair amount of time on the computer and wants a machine that won't catch fire or melt. I'm considering a ThinkPad, but that's just off the top of my head.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What is your exact budget? confused

And how long to you want to keep it? (Do you want the best right now so you don't have to upgrade in the future or are you willing to save some money to just get by with the bare essentials and upgrade in the future?)

ThinkPads are awesome but more expensive.

I wouldn't want to exceed $1500, I guess? Definitely would not want to exceed $2000.

As for your second question, that's more difficult. I guess I'd lean towards not having to upgrade for as long as possible, especially since laptops are so difficult to mod.

Yeah, I was going to get into that. You could easily upgrade RAM or a Hard Drive, everything else is a question depending on brand and model and your expertise. rolleyes:eek:;)

You shouldn't have any problem finding a good one for that price. I really couldn't recommend any specific one for that price. There are so many at that price. I have two IBM ThinkPads and one new Dell Latitude. The only laptop that goes anywhere is the newer Latitude 'cause I don't care if I tear it up :p:D. For the money look at the upper models, I believe the T-Series and X-Series. Or look into the Sony models. A friend as a Sony laptop and he loves it. :major

Best "Bang" for your bucks is definitely Dell, and now you can have their "Bloatware" deleted if you say so on ordering Core2Duo for less than $1,000.........and NO I am not a big Dell Fan, but it is hard to beat there deals on Laptops. Hope that Helps

I'm very concerned about getting a Dell because they tend to ... well, fry. My friends with Dells have mostly had trouble, so I really want to avoid Dell if I can.

What model Sony does your friend have? That's an interesting proposition...

Oh, I never said anything about buying a Dell. I just said I had a Latitude which is supposed to be their more reliable model. And I got it in exchange for doing some contract work for a customer.:) So unless you get a deal like I did, get something else. I'm an IBM fan. I've been working with IBM for many years. :cool

I can't remember which one he had. But I believe they all are good, maybe like the IBMs. :D
Maybe someone else can reply about the Sonys. rolleyes
