Laptop backlight

Hi there,

currently having propblems with my laptop screen as the backlight seems to randomly cut out. It's an acer aspire 5535 and under 2 years old. After having a look at the connections there doesn't seem to be any loose or broken connections and can't find any reason as to why it does turn off. If I leave it alone it does come on but after starting any tasks or watching a video it will turn off, sometimes for minutes and sometimes for longer. A movement of the screen did used to get it back on but has stopped having the desired effect for a while now. Are there any obvious causes for something like this or will it be something more difficult?

Its possible you have a bad cable that connects mother board to the screen but take a good look at the
solder joints around the sockets at motherboard end and inverter end. Also inspect the solder joints
on the inverter.

 

It is very hard to troubleshoot a laptop as they generally have non-standard layouts and components, and they are usually very difficult to disassemble and reassemble. Unless you have a lot of experience with laptop maintenance I suggest you take it to a local computer store.

Also, if it is still under warranty then any work you do on it will probably invalidate the warranty.

 

I agree with collinsl. While voodoo is right, poking around inside a computer with soldering iron is something that should be left up to a qualified technician. Backlight and inverter problems are common in notebooks and can generally be repaired by an experienced technician in less than 2 hours. Parts are usually between $50 and $150.

Acer has a standard 1 year warranty so you may be out of luck there, unless you bought an extended warranty at the time of purchase. Check your paperwork.
