I have a HP Pavillion DV4000 standard laptop. The battery is old and in all honesty should be replaced as it only lasts roughly 10 minutes on a full charge.

Question is, will this prevent me from powering up off the AC Adapter ? Today this beast wont power up at all for my wife. I am going to check connections. I know the adapter is good from multimeter readings, but it still wont power up ? I always thought you could remove the battery and still work off of the AC adapter ?

you should be able to power up the laptop without a battery in it, but maybe in your case, you cant....i would check the a/c adapter's connection with the laptop, it's very common to have a faulty connection. wiggle the cord or something

Some older laptops needed the battery installed, to run off AC power.
Most (all?) modern laptops will run off AC WITHOUT the battery.
Give it a try both ways.

The same thing is happening to my laptop.
I have a one year old HP Pavilion dv2000 and this past week I have noticed that my battery is stuck at 58% charged and will not charge any more.
I have it plugged in, turned on, and the icon on the bottom says 58% available (plugged in, not charging).
I have an extended warranty where I bought it and might just go to them...but I thought I would bring it up here first.
