I want to upgrade a laptop's CPU. I've done this in the past having taken the whole thing apart, found the motherboard and CPU numbers and researched it from there. However this time I'm trying to do it without taking it to pieces - through software alone.

I used CPU-Z to find out the following:
(Click here for the full info from CPU-Z)
CPU: Intel Core Duo T2050, Yonah
    Socket: 479 mPGA
    Size: 65nm
    Core Speed: 798.0 Mhz
    Rated FSB: 532.0 Mhz

    Motherboard: Sony VAIO
    Chipset: Intel i945GM (Rev 03)
    Southbridge: Intel 82801GHM (ICH7-M/U) (Rev B0)
This site gives some information about my CPU:
    http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_Duo/Intel-Core Duo T2050 LF80539GE0252M (BX80539T2050).html

I found this page which should tell me my possible upgrades:

Well the bottom line is I'm stuck! I can find i945GM-Express chipsets, and Gigabyte 945GM, and Intel 945GMS Express and so on. I can't find anything that exactly matches my CPU-Z results, and I'm nervous about buying an incompatible CPU.

Does anyone have a good method for finding compatible upgrades for their laptop CPU? Other than incorrect socket types what else do I need to be careful to match?

I would instead ask myself how much more actual speed can I really expect from a minimal upgrade? Is it worth spending your time and money to get a measly %5 out of it? You could probably do better with a RAM upgrade if you have less than 2GB.

BTW, you linked to chipsets and not CPU'S. You can't change a chipset, it's not an interchangeable thing as they are soldered to the motherboard. You're looking up the wrong tree, sorry to say. Follow the first link's advice.

No I'm trying to change the CPU not the chipsets. But I have a limited number of options when picking a new CPU, based on my motherboard. So I was giving information on my chipset to help identify what those options would be.

I'm pretty sure this is compatible:
    Intel Core Duo T2450 (SLA4M) 2.0GHz/2M/533 Processor $28.50

I think this might be compatible (but just not sure if my mobo will support that FSB?):
    Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2600 2.16 GHz/2M/667 SL8VN $36.81

I'm upgrading the RAM too, but 40% more processing power for about $30 seems like a bargin too.... IF I make sure I get the right part! :)

That's out of my league, if you say %40 then I'd go for it, once you know of course. Someone else should show up knowing more than I do. I'd worry about extra heat.
