Laptop Dead Battery and Intermittant Black Display Screen

    I have an hp Pavillion dv2718us. The battery is dead, but it still runs with the power cord plugged it. But sometimes when it starts up, the lights come on, but the display stays black. It sounds like it is starting up, but the screen does nothing. Is this because of the dead battery, or is it another problem?
