Have an Asus vivobook laptop. It seems to be booting up but thr display isn't working. Just getting loads of horizontal coloured lines across the screen. When I tap the laptop it flickers or the lines disappear or change. I have attached a file with a picture. Could it be a loose connection or something?

Explain what you mean by tapping the laptop.
When the lines disappear, is the screen normal or black?

If I tap the side of the screen with my hand or on the keyboard the either some of the lines disappear or go completely and the screen is just light grey colour but it is still blank. Nothing that should be showing is showing you don't see anything come up at all. The laptop powers on but doesn't seem to make much as in clicking/whirring sound it's not my laptop so don't know what it usually does

Could be a simple loose cable connection. I say simple but it does require disassembling the laptop, then assembling it back again without pinching anything.

I recommend connecting an external monitor and see if the problem appears there too. If you don't have one, not that most TVs made in the last 10+ years support computer input too.

Sorry for the late update. So managed to connect it to an external monitor and the display is showing. What does that mean?

I most likely means there is a problem with the laptop's display. That's actually a good thing (or at least not as bad as it could be) because it means the computer itself is still working and all your data is still there - a reminder, to make a backup.

Take a flashlight and shine it into the laptop screen, then with your nose right up to the screen, look into the display to see if you can see the Windows desktop. If you see a very faint image, that means the backlighting of the monitor has failed. If you see nothing, the screen panel itself most likely has failed or if very lucky, the cable to the laptop monitor is loose.

Both are relatively inexpensive (compared to buying a new laptop) and easy fixes for an experienced tech.
