Hi, may laptop display was off the screen. I think its not the resolution problem because I tried to boot up the bios screen and the display was still off, I already reformatted my laptop but still the display was off the screen..I tried hooking up my laptop to my monitor and the display works fine, so i guess its hardware problem

    Black line - Screen
    Red line - Display

I can still access the bottom of the screen it was just way to down or stretched down

Can you suggest basic troubleshooting for this? Or any idea on what particular part is malfunctioning or misaligned?

    Thanks in advance

Just got home from a laptop repair shop. The technician told me that it is not hardware related @___@ would you believe that?

I might be wrong of course, this is a Samsung netbook and I reimaged(I believe it is called reimage rather than reformat?) it using the samsung recovery solution (compete)

But the technician told me that it needs to be reformatted by Samsung repair shops.

I already tried updating the drivers and no luck. Is the technician right? because I think reimaging the netbook will complety restore the netbook to factory settings making it like a brand new state. It means it should be working fine. Unless the image stored on the recovery is faulty? but i doubt because it works well few weeks ago. Any ideas?

    Thank you

So is this a netbook or a laptop? What is the model number? It sounds like a resolution setting to me. If the technician didn't think it was a hardware issue, why didn't he make the necessary adjustments for you? ???

Have you changed the resolution settings? Does the external monitor use the same resolution as this netbook?

You said you reimaged it, then in your last paragraph you seem to be wondering what will happen if you re-image it.

If you follow the manual's instruction to restore your system back to factory settings, it should fix this issue. But it will also put it way behind in security.

I'm sorry, it was a netbook. A samsung NC110. I already tried the Samsung Recovery Solution (Complete Restore) I believe that restoring it to factory settings and wiping out the data will automatically adjust the resolution to best, besides it only has 2 resolution option. and both does not fit well.

I only asked the technician for some advice because the moment he check it, there will be an automatic charge of $35. Which I don't have.

I really think its the hardware, because I already tried every troubleshooting related to software. Except perhaps for the complete reformat (wiping out the whole OS together with the drivers and recovery solution). The NC110 does not have optical disk drive.

But if it works fine with an external monitor, that sounds more like a driver, or a setting to me.

You say it only lists two. If you look under Screen Resolution, you should see an Advanced settings link and from there, you should see a List All Modes button. That will list all the resolutions Windows supports.

Note too that there is no such thing as a monitor driver - only graphics drivers. This is because Windows does not communicate directly with the monitor. It communicates with the graphics solution which in turn, communicates with the monitor.

When a [so called] monitor driver is installed, all that really does is tell Windows the monitor's name, and which resolutions it supports. Windows then grays out the monitor's unsupported resolutions so you cannot [easily] select them.

If, somehow, your netbook got confused about the monitor it is using, it may have removed the correct resolution from the list, showing you only [the wrong] two.

Hi, I already tried updating the drivers, and restoring the netbook to its factory setting via complete restory should fix and setting related problem right?

I'm already using the recommended resolution for this netbook :/

    Thanks

I don't know what to suggest other than to look for display positioning settings, and trying other resolutions. That said, I don't really expect there to be any positioning options with an integrated monitor. :(

Just looking at your illustration, it would "seem" to me the black line is a 16:9 aspect ration and the red 16:10.

    1920x1080 is a common 16:9
    1920x1200 is a common 16:10

I already tried everything, from drivers, to windows update, complete restore, tweaking registry, etc. no luck.

Thanks for the replies, the laptop was already sent to samsung.

I would be curious your thoughts about the service you got when it comes back - to include (1) fixed to your satisfaction, (2) cost, (3) turn-around time - and of course, (4) what was wrong and how did they fix it.

With the thought it was 4°F this morning when I woke up, one word of caution when it does come back - be sure to let it sit and get totally acclimated and up to room temperature before inserting the battery and powering it up. This applies to all electronics and may be common sense to you - apologies if so. But others reading may need to be reminded that condensation can form inside (as well as on the exterior) the case when very cold electronics are exposed to the warm more-humid air of the indoors. And of course, water and electronics don't play well together. So I recommend resisting temptation and letting it sit for 60 minutes before seeing if the really fixed it. You can expedite the acclimation (and drying) process by removing all panel, bay and cavity covers and opening up the lid.
