Laptop dvd rw drive problem?

    I have a compaq presario laptop with a NEC 5100A dvd rewrite drive. All of the sudden it will not read copyrighted data cd's, music cd's, DVD's, and burned DVD's. It will read burned data and music cd's. I can't figure out what is wrong. Is it a hardware issue or a program issue?

    Could be both hardware or software. First thing to check is the firmware. Big CD/DVD Rw companies, and Nec of course, have easy to use programmes to flash your firmware.

    I finally found a new firmware to flash with, HP and NEC did not have one. After flashing and installing new firmware it is still doing the same thing. Any other sugjestions.
