I am having problems with my laptop, it seems to be 'forgetting' that it has connection to the internet via wifi.

Upon startup it connects automatically, but after a few minutes, when I click on a link on a page nothing happens and a yellow warning sign appears on the wifi icon at the bottom to suggest there is no connection. However upon waving my mouse over this it generally re-connects.

I have tried this at another location with the same issue and other laptops connect fine without interruption.

It is a Toshiba C660 running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Any ideas why is doesn't hold stable?

    Thanks

    James

I have changed the setting, but sadly I still suffer with the same problem :(

Go in and uncheck in Power Management for the Wifi adapter, the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power", and see what happens. Also without the exact whole model# of this unit, there is no way to look up the specs for the Wifi adapter. If it is a Realtek wifi adapter, or Intel, you can download the drivers from either site, not Toshiba's, to see what happens.

Do not use the Microsoft device drivers, find the Toshiba or actual chipset manufacturer drivers and install those and see what happens.

delete all the wifi connections you connected before..clear all cookies..then restart your laptop and add your wifi connection..try it

I have changed the Power Management settings in Device Manager - no change. I've also tried to locate and install the latest driver, but do not seem to be having much success. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C660-195 Part PSC0LE using a Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC #2 Driver version 1002.2.428.2010

    Thanks

Yes, same that I have. I have had no issues with the real Realtek software, and actually get faster connections with it.

Well it seems to be working! Despite the icon having a big fat red cross in it...I'm connected and it seems to be holding. I hope I'm not speaking too soon :)

Thank you for all the help.

What do you mean by the Icon having a Red Cross through it? Post a picture.

That is an X that states that it is either Limited or no connectivity for a Wired Interface, not WiFi. You are going to have to open up the Network Connections, or show what that interface is, by placing your cursor on it, before pressing Fn PrtSc.

Post a screen shot of Network Connections, showing what adapters you have, along with a screen shot of Device Manager, with the "Network Adapters" expanded showing all network adapters.

If you right click on the adapter in Network Connections for the Wired (Local Area Connection), it will give you a choice to show it in the Task Bar or not. Uncheck and it should disappear.

Usually what you get, is when it is not connecting through a connection, and you would see that in Network & Sharing Center. You should have it setup for a "Private" network, not Public.

See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Why-can-t-I-find-a-wireless-network On the Left at "View Active Networks", you can choose the active network, and then delete anything not being used, or duplicate network setups, which can happen if you have done the setup a couple of times.

See this regarding re-naming or deleting old active connections http://www.7tutorials.com/how-rename-active-network-connection-windows-7

I do not get any option when I right click on the adapter, and there doesn't appear to be anywhere in Properties to change it either. Also, I do not know how to change it to a private network.

When I plug a network cable into the laptop and router, whilst I physically have a connection, the icon does not change at all.

I'm not sure what is forcing it to show, as far as I'm aware I don't have a network monitoring program installed. Its not a major issue, just a slight inconvenience.

    Thanks

Follow the information in the link that I posted. I am sorry, double click on the adapter when you go into the Network Connections, and it should be at the bottom of the window that pops up, when you click on "Properties".

I'm sorry but in the links you provided they instruct how to Rename the Network / change the Home Network Icon. The other link tells me about finding a wireless network - I have connection to it already.

I can't see in either of these where they relate to making a network private :/ I don't think I'm mis-reading anything, but please let me know if I am.

As per the adapter properties, this is what I get when I click on Properties,

Not sure where I'm going wrong / misunderstanding.

    Thanks
