Laptop Freeze

    Hi all.
I have an issue with my laptop freezing when I close browser tabs.
All is fine no matter how many pages I have open but every now and then, when I shut several pages in a row it just freezes.
Can't move my cursor, can't call up task manager, nothing.
I have to switch off and restart.
I did leave it frozen once and came back later and it was at the welcome screen.
I had to replace the HDD not long ago, I didn't have any grief before.
I went for a 7200 rpm instead of a 5400 so I thought of overheating but it doesn't freeze when there is lots of activity so maybe not?
    Windows 10.
I've tried Edge, Chrome and Firefox
    Any clues?
    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply TJ
Problem with safe mode would be that it doesn't happen all the time.
I could be browsing for days without a hitch.
I'll take a look at a system monitor utility and see where I go.

    That utility sounds helpful
Nothing has happened since despite me opening pages and shutting them.
It catches me unaware so that thing sitting in the background may shed some light.
I much prefer problems that are conistent rather than the every now and again type.
    Cheers

    I've just had a crash.
This is what reliability monitor is saying.
Anyone got a clue if these are to do with my problem?

Check with Intel- it may be the wrong Intel package for Windows 10

It would be worth you going to

Tried the download centre, it failed to install.
One or more issues caused the setup to fail.
Please fix the issues then retry?

Never had an issue with 10 when I had my old drive installed, only since installing the new drive.

I've found this workaround (beware: it will remove HP Client Securit features, only fingerprint login will be kept...):

    • uninstall both "HP Device security" (skip reboot) and "HP Client Security" (reboot now) from installed apps
Fingerprint sensor drivers won't be removed, so you can now enable bundled Windows 10 biometric login option
    • open Start menu, type "Access options" to open the access options configuration page
    • if the Fingerprint option is disabled (on my domain-joined machine it was) you need to change your Local (or Group) policies to enable it; follow the steps here.
(if the link above dies, here's the policy registry key to change)
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System]
    "AllowDomainPINLogon"=dword:00000001
    • reopen the access options configuration page, now the Fingerprint login option should be enabled, register your fingerprints then choose a PIN (Windows Hello requires it, don't know why but that's it)
    • lock your computer with WIN+L and the fingerprint login should work immediately

No more DpHostW.exe process, problem solved!

Confused by the mention of fingerprint login. Do I do the rest and ignore that part?

  16. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

What I saw, on-line, was to just go to settings, Apps, and uninstall from there.
If you use fingerprint login, then ,I would check to see if there is an alternative before removing.

Before I could try anything else I had another freeze.
I think heat can be ruled out as this time the laptop was resting and felt much cooler than the previous crashes
Something has come to mind and I'm not sure of the implications.
The HDD I bought to replace my old one was new but was pulled from a laptop that had a SSD drive replacement
It already had Windows 10 on it so I didn't format it.
Could there be a conflict between the OS and my hardware?
I had a legit copy on this laptop so if there could be a conflict I could format and start again (if necessary :-()

    Had a browse about.
I'm thinking I need to do a 'Reset this PC'
Originally this laptop was windows 8, I took the free upgrade to 10.
The new HDD I purchased is windows 10
If I do a reset this pc using the keep my files option what will I end up with?
    I'm guessing a clean version of 10?

That was a very bad idea. You should always perform a new install on a different machine. I would recommend a clean install of Win 10 as you mnetioned. If you have a legit copy of Win 10 for that PC you will not have to reactivate it after installing. Choose I do not have product key and complete thr install.

We have all been there. It depends on if Win 10 was ever activated on that computer and or what type of license you have. Has Win 10 ever been installed on that pc or what copy of it did you have?

The one on the old HDD was a free upgrade from 8 to 10.
The one on this new HDD would have been OEM I guess and I'm not sure if it was activated but I didn't have to do anything when I installed the HDD.
It just booted into windows as soon as I turned my laptop on and I've never had any prompts to active.

    Hmmm, is that it?
I downloaded the tool to my laptop.
    Went through the routine.
It started it's business, 1%-2% etc,
I went out for an hour, came back and my laptop was showing the desktop as though nothing had happened.
    Has it done it's magic?

  29. sobeit

    sobeit Master Sergeant

    Well, I'm assuming so.
I accepted the terms and conditions etc.
That's when it started the slow 1%-2% etc
It was just a bit strange that when I came home it was not on the welcome screen.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see?

  30. Techjourney

    Techjourney Private E-2

It doesn’t sound like it installed anything. During the install you are required to complete information for the install. I would run again and make sure you see it show it is installingi Windows etc

  32. sobeit

    sobeit Master Sergeant

Well, I have no idea what I did wrong last time.
I've tried using the windows 10 reset option.
It definitely reinstalled 10 this time as my apps needed reinstalling and the annoying Cortana was back.
Hopefully this has 'married' the HDD and the OS/hardware together.
What ya think TJ, will it have done the job?

  33. Techjourney

Majorgeeks is probably the safest site to download anything from!
Driver booster is a great tool- I would recommend it to anyone.
Manufacturer sites are often best for drivers, but, if you are not sure what /if any driver is giving problems, then I would use driver booster myself.

Well, here I am again and that can mean only one thing!!
    Yes, it's happened again.
After restoring Windows using the built in Windows 10 restorer I had a freeze while having around 9 or 10 web pages open and also using Google Earth so I decided to do the USB clean install.
I wiped all partitions and reinstalled Windows 10.
That must be it, I thought, I've been browsing for many hours then tonight I had 9 web pages open and it froze.
This time I just sat and waited instead of turning off.
Around 10 minutes passed and my laptop rebooted.
When I signed in and re-launched Edge, all pages reloaded (I have it set to start from where I left off).
Reliability monitor shows 2 critical events.
Windows Explorer stopped responding, which happened about ten minutes before the freeze.
Then windows was not properly shut down.
Doesn't mention Edge having a problem.
    Any more ideas?

Tim, I've tried Google and Firefox and it still happens.

    TC, 6gb of RAM.
I will try a different browser again but I don't hold out much hope and it may be a while till it happens.
If it's worth looking at log files now let me know, otherwise I'll get back if it happens with a different browser.

    Boooooooooooo!!!!!!!
    I'm back.
Used Chrome since the last freeze.
Tonight laptop was on for 10 minutes, I opened my 11th window and bam.
Waited 5 minutes and my laptop rebooted.
    Same old same old.
What I don't get is that before replacing the HDD I never had a problem.
    Next?
    It's a HP Pavillion
AMD A6-4455M APU with Radeon HD Graphics 2.10GHz
    6GB RAM
    64 bit Windows 10 Pro

That isn’t good. Lets first check your hard drive. It is best to download the diagnostic tool from the manufacturer or you can use the following. Make sure you run the long test and report the results.

    https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/seatools-win-master/

    Step 1:
    Speccy
    http://filehippo.com/download_speccy

    1. File > Save Snapshot. This will create a file called [hostname].speccy
    2. File > Publish Snapshot. This saves your snapshot to their servers
3 Copy and Paste the link to your next Reply

    Step 2:
    Click on Start menu
    Type in cmd
Right click on cmd in list and select run as administrator
Copy and Paste the commands into the command console
    1. sfc /scannow
    2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    When these have completed.
Right click on the top bar command window
Left click on Edit then Select All
Right click on the top bar again
Left click on edit then copy
    paste into your reply

    Step 3:
    Download Process Explorer
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

    1. Save it to your desktop then run it. Right Click and Select Run As Administrator
    2. Select View Menu Click Select Columns
    3. In the Select Columns Window Check Verified Signer and Click OK
    4. Select Options Menu and Check Verify Image Signatures
    5. Double Click o the CPU Column to sort by highest CPU usage.
(System Idle Process should be at the top once sorted properly)
    6. Wait approximately a minute
    7. Select Save or Save As from the File Menu and save System Idle Process.txt to Desktop
    8. Upload the file to your Reply

    Step 4:
Please download and Run the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
    http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe

    1. Right click on Vew.exe program and select Run as Administrator
2.. Under Select log to query
    3. select System
    4. Under Select type to list
    Select:
    * Error
    * Warning
Choose the Number of events as follows:
    Click on umber of events
Type 20 in the box (1 to 20)
Click the Run button (Notepad will open the log)
    upload files to next reply
Rename to SystemLog.txt or it will be overwritten

Run these steps again Except at step 3.
    Select Application
    Rename log file to ApplicationLog.txt
Upload files to your next reply

I analyzed your logs and found the following issues below. I think the reason it is freezing is due to the higher CPU temperature as shown below. The best way to help this issue is to clean the laptop the best you can. If you are not comfortable opening it up, then you can try cleaning the vents and any other areas you can get to and see how much help it provides.

Your date seems to be set wrong.
    Current Time: 04/02/2018 13:52:23

Temperature is on the high side
    Average Temperature: 87 °C
    Normal Average: 45°C - 57°C

Video Card driver out of date:
    Release Date: May 2012

    Interrupts are a little high
    Possible issues with drivers.

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop.
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/MiniToolBox.exe

    • Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
    • In the main window please checkmark the following checkboxes:
    ○ List last 10 Event Viewer log;
    ○ List Installed Programs;
    ○ List Devices (Only problems);
    ○ List Users, Partitions and Memory size;
    ○ List Minidump Files.
    • Click Go and wait patiently.
    • Upon completion (a reboot may be needed) a file called Result.txt will be saved on your desktop.
Please upload the file in your next reply.
