Not sure whether to post this on Hardware or Software. I have Windows 7 Dell Laptop. About a month ago, this system refused to connect to the Internet. I even connected the cable modem directly to the system and it still wouldn't connect. I took it to a local computer repair store. They couldn't get it working so they re-installed Windows. I brought the system back home and within 20 min, the laptop froze, and screen started to flash solid colors, black, white, purple, red, green. I recorded a video of it. I took it back to repair shop and they told me they monitored it all day and it never flashed colors. rought it home, happened again. Come to find out it only happens while browsing. I use Google chrome. I've also used I.E. and it still does it. I haven't taken it back to repair shop, but I'd like to get second opinions on what you think it might be. This has been scanned for Malware/Viruses with Malware Bytes, MSE, Spybot. Everything came back clean and since Windows was re-installed, their isn't much running on the system. It will allow me to reboot the system to get it back running normally, but after using the internet for a bit, the flashing happens again. As I am writing this, I'm rushing so it doesn't freeze on me. Is there anything else I can do/what do you recommend I look out for? We purchased another laptop and I would like to keep this one as a backup. Thank you!

    HI

A quick test to try is to boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and see how you go with the flashing colours.

Do you get any text on the screen, like "monitor going to sleep" when you get the flashing colours?

So only in browsers you get this and no other application? (do try safe mode as I mentioned earlier, may not be malware but I would not rule it out either and our Malware Red Me guide is one I would advise you run and start a new thread with logs in our malware forum)

Check Device Manager for any yellow ! marks as this could be missing chipset and/or graphics driver, Windows on re-install will only likely install a basic one.

What is the model version of the Dell, code should be on the bottom or you can run the service tag scan check at DELL HERE

If you are familiar with linux, I'd suggest booting a live linux CD and connecting to the internet and see if the freezing behavior occurs. If it does, then there is some sort of hardware problem rather than software.

If it doesn't occur then you have to look at what little you have installed on the browsers because something in each browser is causing the behavior since it happens with two browsers and wired or wireless.

Thank for the replies. I'll try both suggestions and let you know results.

Update on this system. It seems that Safe mode with networking allows me to use the laptop without it freezing and flashing solid colors. Also, I thought I had solved the issue because the power supply to the laptop wasn't charging. When I jiggled it, it did charge the laptop. It was charged about 1/2 way, I went online for an hour in Normal mode, it froze and flashed again.

Since it works fine in safe-mode with networking, what does that mean? I understand limited drivers are loaded, but what else should I be looking at?

    I have a Dell Studio 1555
    Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1
    Intel Core 2 Duo,T6600 2.2GHz
    4GB Ram
    64Bit OS

No yellow marks in Device Manager. Flashing occurred prior to Re-install of Windows and after Re-install.

Also, no messages that monitor is going to sleep. I changed settings so the monitor is always on while I'm testing for a solution.

I do not have a live Linux CD, how can I obtain one?

Havent had time to do the Malware guide yet. This is my next step.

    Thanks!

I suspect the video driver. In safe mode generic video drivers are loaded.
You are probably using the wrong video driver since it had a problem then you reinstalled and carried the problem along.

You can try running a diagnosis here
    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/studio-1555/diagnose
but you might get a freeze since you would be running this in nirmal boot from a browser.

There are twi video drivers here http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/studio-1555/driver
one is for Intel and the other for AMD. You need one or the other not both.

Go into Device Manager, expand Display adapters. Right click the one you have and select properties. The click the driver tab and click Driver Details. What is showing there?
