I am usually wary of the low end systems offered by Dell, because they are usually somewhat 'disposable', but this looks to be a pretty good deal to me.

    Here's the specs:

This laptop has a 14.5 in screen and is on Dell.com for $725. Does anyone have any opinion about this machine. It seems to be a pretty good deal to me, but I haven't bought a laptop for quite a while.

crappy processor...don't expect to play games or anything too high end on it...a decent computer for surfing the web and composing documents

    "crappy processor"

Huh? Pentium M processors are the top of the line for laptops. They benchmark much higher than a Pentium 4 (or Pentium D) with a higher clock speed.

That processor would do fine with games... However, the video card will be a huge bottleneck. But, if you aren't using it for gaming then the point is moot.

That laptop is a good system. Although you can get it for about $584 rather than $725.

Go here, it's on the top of the page if you buy through the educational part of Dell's website. If you don't want to do that, you can still get it for $614. It's in the second group down:

i was only looking at the GHz

Yes, but the speed of the processor is not the only thing that determines it's productivity. AMD processors run at a slower clock speed than Intel P4s, yet if you match them up Hz to Hz, the AMD processor will come out on top by a mile. That's why AMD uses their naming system (i.e. 2500+ - a 1.7 Ghz processor that performs comparably to a pentium @ 2.5 Ghz) This is the same with Pentium M processors. They are much more efficient than the P4 processors, so they don't need the higher clock speed. This also lets them use less power which is a huge plus for a laptop.

Also you cannot compare desktop GHz against laptop Ghz. Desktops always have higher number GHz than laptops. Bazza
