Hello, this is my first post, can you guys assist me on this. well i have bought a laptop at a pawnshop and it is a dell latitude c610 model pp01L. and when i got it, it worked great, but every time i disconnect it, it gives me a error that i need to change the battery, so i went and bought a new battery for the computer. and when i put the new battery in, it didn't come on. and when i plug in the AC, it start making this funny smell coming out the fan hole at the bottom. and when i take the battery out, and put the old one in, same result, as well as without one, so i don't know what else to do, can you guys give me suggestions about this because i am really lost, and i spent good money on this laptop. I would really appreciate it alot.

    Thank you
    Harlan.

take the laptop back to the pawn broker and tell them that the laptop don't work and get your money back

A bit more information about the replacement battery for the C610 would have been very useful.

Did you get the exact same type of battery ie PP01L with the same charge capacity as the original, ie 3300mAH (just a guess).

Laptops are bizzare creatures as they sometimes require bios upgrades for batteries whose charge rating is higher than a predetermined size. Example as follows: My daughter's Dell latitude C600's battery started giving problems (I can't recall the exact ID code). The original battery (now faulty) had a charge rating of 3800mAH.

When looking on ebay I saw many suitable batteries but with charge ratings of 4200mAH and higher. Prior to purchasing the higher charge battery, I did a quick google search plus had a look on the Dell forum. I discovered that although the higher charge batteries where compatible with my laptop, higher charge rating batteries than the original had issues of (1) not being detected by the laptop (2) if detected they did not charge....

Apparently, the solution was a bios upgrade which would likely (not certain) fix the issue. Having read many such posts I decided to replace the original faulty batt with an identical one in every respect. Result no issues.

    Apologies for laboring the point.
