I have two keys on my keyboard that work intermittently. Sometimes they work fine; other times they don't work at all or I get this: ssss or aaaa. Yes, it's the "a" and "s" keys. All the other keys work fine. Is it possible that the keyboard just needs taken apert and cleaned? If I need to replace the keyboard, is this something I could do myself or is it better left to a professional? I'm fairly computer savvy, but don't know much about repairing them. My laptop is more than four years old and I really can't afford to replace the entire computer.

You don't have to be computer savvy to take something apart and put it back together. You have to have the right tools, be handy with your hands, see well and have good lighting, and know how to take it apart, put it back together and have no extra pieces left over.

There are lots of tutorials out there - like this one.

Since these two keys are right next to each other, I would suspect something got in there and a good cleaning might do the trick.

If me, I would connect a USB keyboard to the computer and if those two keys act up there too. If that worked and if I didn't need a portable computer, I would just stick with the full size, external keyboard.

As far as taking it to a shop, there is no shame in that. They have likely done it dozens of times, if not hundreds of times. In fact, since that is a common job, they may have a flat rate (plus parts) so you can call around and see how much it will cost. Plus, they are then responsible for any collateral damage.

I took my husband's laptop to a one man operation shop to have the keyboard replaced. (My husband grabbed the laptop to stop it from falling and broke a key in the process.) The "tech" found the original part and replaced it in front of me. I didn't trust myself getting the ribbon connector cable correct. It was worth the $30 labor cost for me to have it done correctly the first time.

Sadly he has retired. I was going to have him replace the spinning hard drives in our laptops with ssds.
