Hi im building my first pc, and i want to spend ages on it getting it perfect, before i replace the family computer with the one that ive built, and i dont want to use the family monitor because then no one in the family can use the family computer, cause i'll have the monitor.

    does that make sense

but ive got a laptop, a sony pcg-k115b its about two years old, is there anyway of using that as a temp screen, ive checked ports

and apart from the obviuos its got

    av out
    i.link
    usb
    pc card slot
monitor vga connector (doesn't say in or out, buts i guess its out)

    any ideas

You can't really do this. There are such things that can convert a laptop monitor and give you a standard vga plug to use with a desktop. The thing is the stupid adapter costs about 150$, so it's cheaper to buy a monitor.

There are other special programs which would let you use the monitor on the laptop by setting up a network between the two comps and then it would feed the information through the network. But it's a huge pain to setup. It sometimes will cut out and of course it would have the downfall of only working when in windows.

Ultimately unless you have many hours to blow your best bet is just buy another monitor. If money's a real issue just check the bargain finder in your area. Most places have people giving away 14" monitors for free all the time. Or you can pick up 17" for about 30$ usually.
