I woke up this morning to find that my laptop had lost wireless connectivity to our home network. I don't know why, no one has changed any settings, but for some reason the laptop just won't connect to the internet.

It's telling me the signal strength is excellent, but it won't stop "acquiring network address", and earlier today I got a windows system error saying there was a problem with the IP address...I don't know what could be wrong. I've tried restarting both the laptop and desktop, disconnecting and reconnecting the wireless modem, and disabling and re-enabling the wireless network. Apparently the problem isn't with the connection itself, but with acquiring the IP address. I don't know how to fix this as it's a cable connection and usually does it automatically. Any ideas?

OK, the system error popped up again and it said "There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network." It keeps telling me the IP address of the laptop is invalid (0.00.00 or something) but when I connect directly to the router and modem (not wirelessly) it connects fine.

Is your wirless access point secure? If not, I would suggest securing it and giving it another try.

Try turning your modem off for a couple of minutes, if it still doesn't connect you could
try reseting your tcp stack by running the command " netsh int ip reset log.txt "

    Gyniolatry,

I forgot to mention that the ethernet connection works fine. It's the wireless conncetion that is a problem. The task bar says it finds a network, but when I click on it is says no networks are within range, even though I am right next to the router. Same response if I go to network connections. I have another wireless machine and it works just fine on the same router.

Check these settings on your laptop -
WIFI switch is ON !! (soz...)
TCP/IP properties Obtain IP and Obtain DNS are set to automatic
Set netbios to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in the TCP/IP settings [Advanced>WINS tab]
DHCP service is started and set to Automatic [Start>Run>services.msc]
    WIFI adaptor drivers are updated
Unistall FREE TRIAL antivirus/firewall programs that have expired .....

Check these on your modem -
Find WEP or WPA key and re-enter into your laptop
SSID Broadcast is set to enable
MAC filtering is disabled (or configured correctly)

See how you go - if not please provide some more info ie-
    Windows version
    Model of Laptop
    Model of Modem
    Security key type
    AV/Firewall program(s) installed

This loss of connectivity can happen if someone has gotten onto your wireless, especially if the hardwire still works fine. If it was me, I would change the password for your router, rather than using the default. Even if you aren't using the default, someone could have dictionary-cracked your router. Just my 2 cents worth. Best of luck to ya.
