    I have a laptop(Acer TravelMate 8372) with win 7 pro 64-bit os,1TB hdd and have a Samsung 2GB memory module 666.7 MHz (DDR3-1333 / PC3-10600).I have enough money not to upgrade the memory by adding a Patriot 8GB 666.7 MHz (DDR3-1333 / PC3-10600) but they only stock Patriot 8GB DDR3 1600MHz memory modules.

Would the stock Patriot 8GB DDR3 1600MHz work with the Samsung 2GB memory module 666.7 MHz (DDR3-1333 / PC3-10600) installed? I know that you can mix different brands but can you install DDr3 memory at different frequencies like the one module 666.7 MHz and the other module at 1600 MHz and will this one be slowed down to 666.7Mhz?

    Thanks.

It will only be as fast as the slowest module. Unless you're doing high resource demanding applications, 10 GB would be enough to run W7 with some to spare. That would require one module.

Using W7 is a bit of a security risk however.

I'm sorry, but I looked... really looked... and I cant find any DDR3 memory that runs slower than 1066.
    Do not mix modules... ever.
They are paired off at the factory, and mis-matching them will only make the system bog.
Like the Mekanic said you will be taking a 1600mhz module and slowing it down to 666.

    From a certain point of view;
You can buy 1 8 gig for about 30 bucks and replace the samsung with it.
This triples your ram performance and there is no risk of bog or roadblock to your system.
And you get to use the samsung as a christmas ornament.

All I can find is Travelmate 8372T. Here is the information
    https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/travelmate-8372t

NO! Since the maximum memory is 8GB, you can't run 10GB, which you want to do.

You can go here https://www.crucial.com/ and let the site run a scan. That way, you will be positive that the information is for your travelmate and not a slightly different model.

I found this on a US site: The Acer TravelMate 8372 Laptop takes the PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 204pin SDRAM SODIMM so the current Samsung memory is not what the Travelmate takes.
    I found a UK site https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-ram-upgrades/acer/travelmate-notebook/timeline-8372

Thanks everyone but that really doesn't help me at all.

What part of you can't add an 8GB stick to the 2GB stick and get it to work, don't you understand?

Replace the 2GB with the 8GB.

Or get 2 x 4GB Ram? That is the big question.

Is there a way other than to swap out memory modules to see how much a pc\laptop can support if you can't find info online somewhere and is the limit hard coded or somewhere in the bios\uefi?

    Thanks.

I gave you 2 links in post #4, crucial and a UK site that states the maximum memory is 8GB and both sites also give the exact specs of the RAM. I typed the specs for the RAM your Travelmate takes in bold.

On another related question:Is the limit of system memory hardware like the northbridge or southbridge chip on the motherboard or software ie. in the bios,etc... and can it be overridden? Would like to know for interest sake.

Looks like I'll be buying 2 x 4GB laptop memory.Had hoped it would support atleast 16GB max. :(

    Thanks.

hey Max.... hold on a sec...
Go here first and at least do the read
    https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/fix-the-maximum-amount-of-memory-usable-by-windows-7-64-bit/

And why haven't you at least tried win10?

The article doesn't have anything to do with maxdamage's problem.
He knows how much memory is installed. He doesn't need to change the amount showing.
He wishes to add more RAM and had hoped to add more than the hardware supports.

If win 10 was stable like win 7 then maybe but my laptop won't support win 10 anyway and then the igpu is dx10 compatible not dx12 compatible also another reason and then I am on a capped data plan and I can't afford to risk win 10 suddenly updating 12 gigs when I don't have that much left. Only have a 10 gig anytime 10 gig night surfer data cap per month.

Have a problem.Had the two memory modules delivered this morning and discovered 2 of the nine screws for the back plate cover had been stripped which means I can't screw them open. The one is in a small "shaft" which makes that even more difficult.

I suspect the company that installed the 1 TB hdd may have stripped those 2 screws before I was given the laptop years ago.

yup, he probably used a power screwdriver or a screwgun...
or the cover has been taken off 40 or 50 times and everything is just getting worn out

My laptop has plastic covers screwed to a metal frame.

If yours is the same style you might get lucky on this one.

    Go get the soldering gun.
Hold it on the screwhead until the plastic under it starts to soften.
Then gently and carefully persuade the cover to slip past the screwhead.

The screws are metal and not plastic.Whoever at Acer that thought that one "big" cover plate with 8 surface metal screws and one recessed was a bright idea then they deserve a halberd shoved somewhere. When I upgraded the memory for my late father's HP-Compaq laptop that was a breeze as the separate cover for the memory was easy to unscrew,takeoff,etc....

no no, I know the screws are metal...
is the cover plastic or steel?

    The cover is plastic.

Okay, so apply heat to the plastic and it will soften.
In your case it is underneath and around the stripped screwhead.
So hold the soldering gun on the screwhead.
The plastic under and around the screwhead will soften.
It won't take long for the plastic around the screw to soften enough so you can slide the cover past the screwhead.

    Oh omg...
    An I3-350?
That's one of the old pentium chips.
Did you know you can still buy one for 30 bucks?

I have a win 95 license, a win Vista license
A win xp and 2 win 7 licences.

I'm seriously considering partitioning off a drive and getting one of these old girls reinstalled.
If for no otjer reason than to prove to these puppies we used to do it all on a 1 gig hard drive with 32 megs of ram...
with room and memory left over.
And I'm sure today it won't take me an hour to download Netscape Navigator... it supports frames!

    Ahh the memories.
