laptop monitor going blank & whining

My laptop's monitor's being blanking out recently. When it first happened, I googled a solution to hold the power button for 30+ seconds without the battery or power cord plugged in, and it worked and gave me no trouble. About a month later the monitor blanked out again, and this time the 'fix' hasn't been working out. I don't know if this happened previously also, but now the monitor is giving out a whine. I kept trying to reboot the laptop to get the screen going, but as long as the whine came up, the screen wouldn't show anything. After a while, the whine went away, and the next reboot worked. This has happened a couple times, with the whine coming with the blank screen.

The screen when blank does light up a little, but nothing shows.
Everything else is running fine; I can hear Windows boot up and log in.
I own an MSI GX630, if that is of any relevance.
