I just bought a laptop and have had it for 3 weeks all of a sudden I get to the top left of my screen now and then a black square that shows up that is about 2 x 3 then goes away. I have never seen anything like this before, it is a 5 year old Compaq EVO N600c everything works great but I get this black square showing up now and then and then goes away.

Considering that the laptop is 5 years old, then it's a good guess that it's finally starting to show the signs of age, and that the monitor is in the early stages of finally going dead. If you think it's the best option, since the laptop, as you said, works just fine, you can take it into a repair shop and have them positively diagnose, and then fix the problem. Don't know how much that would cost, since I've never taken a computer in for that sort of thing before. However, again considering that it is 5 years old, then you might also consider, if simply repairing it would be too costly in the long run, getting a new laptop as well.

My thinking exactly. I paid not much for it and suspected something had to be wrong and of course have it 3 weeks now and something goes out SUCKS! I can fix anything but monitors oh well I think I will just let the girls play with it until it goes out and buy me a brand new one :D

Doesn't sound like dead pixels, check out display, settings, advanced in control panel. It could be the remnants of an old program too, sounds like something aol used to do when I ran their software. Run hijack this and see what pops up.

Another good program to check out your pc is System Information for Windows, home use free...

I personally didn't see anything that would cause that in the HiJack This! log, but maybe I missed something. And do you have any other test programs for your PC? They might bring up something different.

I have run other test programs and come up with nothing. I did a spy ware run and removed a bunch of junk and a virus scan and there was nothing too. I also got rid of some off the wall programs and re-booted and since I have done that I have not seen the mysterious black square show up and disappear, really strange. I have no dead pixles at all and so I am not sure what the problem, might have been I also have good back lighting so it was and still is a mystery to me. But for some reason now after all the stuff I have done it seems to be gone? ( I hope) ;)
