Vista is no different than 7, so hate would be a personal preference. I hate working on any machine with Vista or XP, due to I have spent too much time working with 7 and Ubuntu. As for the memory

    Your Aspire 5315 System Specs

System specs as shipped by the manufacturer.
Scan your system to view your specific system configuration. Memory:

    Maximum Memory: 2GB
    Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Crucial has a 2gig kit for $36.00. Can't beat that price.

No different? Ummm, there are quite a few differences. Vista is certainly more than Windows 7 than XP - but clearly Windows 7 is much improved over Vista (even if not that noticeable looking at the Desktop. I like say Windows 7 is Vista 2.0.

Vista was a disaster for many users, and another "Windows-ME" for Microsoft. That said, MANY Vista users have had a trouble-free experience with it (as I did with ME! ;)).

I do agree with the suggestions to use the Crucial and Corsair memory wizards.

Vista was not a disaster, so quit spreading fud. And no, it was not a ME.

I am the same way, due to it is what is considered a "Cross-over" platform, which Win2k also was. ME was just a disaster, along with WMP7, and Dos4.x. I have never had any problems with Vista, it was always rock solid. Now of course, there are some hardware vendors that dropped the ball, and blamed MS, same as MS blamed the hardware manufacturers, due to not only the Hibernate issue, which is still in 7, and possibly 8, but also hardware that manufacturers stated would work with Vista onwards, but didn't.

Funny that the hardware all of a sudden started to work with 7. That is the stuff that people blame Vista for, not with the realization of the real issue. Of course, those are the same that never touched it, and listened to all of the FUD that not only MS helped to light a fire about, but also had propaganda help spread.

As for your mom, unless you have issues and cannot find the OEM discs to reinstall, Vista will be fine. I have a 5 year old laptop that I maintain for a friend, that Vista is rock solid and has never had any problems. My neighbor on the other hand, has Win7x64 and I have had nothing but problems trying to keep it stable. Even with our Win7x32 pro desktop, I constantly have to fix something on it, that a update breaks. Never had that issue with Vista, ever.

As for the RAM, Crucial has always stood behind their promise and have never had issues with them. Even when the UPS driver mis-delivered, Crucial was right on top to help figure out what happened. Newegg.com on the other hand, there are too many people that have reported that Newegg is starting to get bad about their policies, when it comes to returns, and replacements.

If you are using 7, you are using the same setup as Vista.

I know. I didn't say you did. "I" said it was a disaster.
FUD? Please check the history of Windows and Microsoft since DOS days. Vista was:
    1. A financial disaster for Microsoft,
    2. A migration disaster for many organizations,
    3. A personal disaster for many - MANY - home users.
For those reasons, millions and millions of users did not migrate to Vista, but instead, waited for Windows 7. And many who did migrate to Vista, rolled back to XP because Vista was... a disaster.

Microsoft was right to blame the hardware makers - they had a HUGE part in Vista's failing. Same with some of the security software makers. Microsoft published the specs way before Vista was released, but many hardware makers refused to create Vista drivers - or waited well over a year after Vista's release - ONLY because they wanted to see how Vista was being adapted. Which it wasn't - not anywhere near what MS had wanted, or expected.

Same issue with 64-bit. Microsoft, Intel, and AMD have been 64-bit capable for many years (back to XP and beyond). But 3rd party software makers (especially security) refused to create 64-bit versions, and hardware makers refused to develop 64-bit drivers. It was not until the RAM makers made gobs of RAM affordable and USERS started demanding 64-bit support that the rest of the computer industry finally woke up.

So, I say again, Vista was a disaster for many reasons - some definitely brought on by Microsoft itself, but a lot caused by other associated industries. And like ME, Vista was a disaster for Microsoft which was what I said in the first place about ME. :( Even though I liked ME.

Sorry, but there are many differences, as clearly seen here.

FTR I also said, "MANY Vista users have had a trouble-free experience with it (as I did with ME!)". I am glad your Vista experience was good. But history shows you (like me with ME) are not in a large majority, if a majority at all. So it is not correct to assume one's experiences translate across all users. For in the case of Vista, it clearly does not.

FUD? How about instead of launching personal criticisms, or playing moderator trying to stifle others' input, we just debate the facts presented leaving the personal insults out of these technical discussions? There's really no room for it. It hurts feelings, it creates resentment and animosities, and does not help the OP - and helping the OP is why we are all here - isn't it?

digerati, I look at it as your opinion, and WTH does it have to do with the OP situation. My answer is nothing.

My opinion? I provided a link to the horse's mouth proving there are significant differences between Vista and Windows 7. My opinion is immaterial.

As far as Vista being a disaster? Okay, "disaster" might be my opinion, but Vista was not a success for Microsoft is a simple, verifiable fact. Migration to Vista from XP was not a success. Most corporate networks did not migrate to Vista. As for home users, again, it was not a success there either. The vast majority of XP users did NOT migrate to Vista and many that did, rolled back. You can see here where XP still dominates over Vista.

Again, I am glad Vista was a success for you (like ME did for me) but for Microsoft, the corporate world, and for most users, it was not a successful product. Again, not my opinion, just a business fact.

So did failing to succeed in replacing XP as the dominant Windows OS in the world result in a "disaster" for Microsoft? Many would say, yes!
