    Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone here can help me with a problem I'm having.

A friends laptop stopped working a while back, he isn't sure what happened but figured that the HD was the issue. So I've got a new HD, put it in and was just getting the message, no boot able disk. So I connected it to another laptop and formatted and installed an OS, put it back into the laptop, it starts up, looks like it's loading windows XP, then a quick flash of a blue screen and it restarts.

Does this sound like anything in particular to anyone here? I can't see what the error screen says as it's just a flash, could it have anything at all to do with ram? I'm hoping not as I simply cannot get one of the ram hatches screws out and it's shredding every time I try! :D

If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Very possible that the install using a different computer has left it messed up with this laptops hardware configuration. I would try doing a clean install now that it is at least recognized in the bios.

Ok, that was a no go, I was given this message when trying to boot from the OS cd.

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer.

make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer. and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. this may involve running and manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

setup cannot continue. to quit setup press f3"

To clarify, It's all connected properly and the like :)

What happens if you put in the old hard drive? Is it recognized? You may be having to find a way to access the RAM.

The old HD the same thing happens, the quick blue screen.

    I just found a method here... http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives...-hard-disk-drives-installed-in-your-computer/

Switched of Sata support in the bios and now that error message when booting from the os cd is gone, so now I'm installing the os again, but on the laptop it will be staying in this time, I'll repost when its done. and hopefully there won't be a blue screen! *crosses fingers*

And should I need to access the ram, I'm not really sure what to do, this screw head is pretty stripped now :(

Well, It seems that's gotten around it, I was able to install XP on to the laptop now and it's rebooting and everything fine! no blue screens, if only they supplied drivers for XP for this machine :) At the moment it looks like I might have gotten around it, thanks a lot for replying though, really appreciate it :)

    Hi,

You should be able to switch SATA support back on now that Windows is installed and still be able to boot (if you haven't already done it--it should give you better performance).
