After seven years of reliable service my Dell Inspiron 6000 will not work. I turned it off one nigth and the following day nothing. The power light comes on; the HD activity light comes on for a second and then nothing; the screen remains black with no image. I've removed and reseated the RAM as well as the HD. I've tried booting from the CD drive with a boot-up CD but no joy. Any help in diagnosing the problem is welcomed.

    Thanks,

    Greetings, no_luck...

Since you've eliminated the hard drive and RAM, the fact that you cannot boot to an optical live disk seems to indicate that the machine may have CPU and/or motherboard problems (which in a laptop is pretty bad news).

Is there any way that you can test the hard drive and RAM in another machine to verify? And have you tried re-seating the battery module and tried to boot the machine while it's plugged into main power (both with and without the battery installed)?
