    Hi

I'm currently fixing a laptop on which the screen backlight has failed. There's like half a dozen options under the "display" part of the HP parts list, though, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what replacement part to order.

I mean, there's one full kit (including webcam, etc.) for $250, while there's a screen only kit for as low as about $170. If ONLY the screen is bad, then I can just order that one, right? Or do I have to order the $190 screen only one, as it doesn't have the "core charge" send in your defective part to not get charged THAT money?

I've ordered replacement parts for all sorts of laptops, etc. before but this is the first backlight issue I am fixing myself.

Here's the link to the part list:

The options generally depend on your skill level and how much time you are willing to invest.

First, a caveat: If you are not familiar with disassembling and reassembling notebook PCs, I would spend a few extra bucks to have an experienced tech do it. Notebook PC repair ranks right below watch and jewelry repair: If you accidentally make a wrong move, it's easy to cause additional damage to internal cables (Although I own and run a PC repair shop and can fix desktops in my sleep, the $30-$40 wholesale labor fee I pay to outsource screen replacement to a professional notebook tech is money well spent). If you go this route, you should be able to get everything done (with the tech using an LCD pulled from a system with a fried motherboard) for around $200 or less.

That being said, the easiest repair is to buy a complete pre-assembled top half (shell, webcam, LCD). This will only require three connections (video, camera and power cables). If buying the LCD only, you'll have to disassemble the top half and pay closer attention to carefully disconnecting and reconnecting more ribbon cables.

If you want to save a few bucks doing it yourself, check out eBay: It's likely you'll find pulled, tested used parts about 50% less than HP. Just be sure to stick with "Top Rated" sellers in your home country that offer a minimum 30-day guarantee if the part is DOA.

    Hope this helps. :)

I've disassembled tons of laptops and replaced parts on them; I've just never had to replace a screen yet, which is why I'm trying to get clarification on the cheapest part I can order.

I appreciate you trying to help, but again, I'm looking for the cheapest part to order to fix the issue. And yes, once I figure THAT out, I can search eBay and the likes to see what is available.

Personally i think you'll need to ring them or a qualified repair center to be sure you get the right part. The descriptions are poor like you said and i can't make out which would be suitable.

Someone else with some experience may know but I'm stumped lol. Sorry! :)
