Like to know if some one can help me on getting my Dell Latitude CPX laptop running, it is running on Windows 2000 NT, and do not have a copy of it, like to know where I can download a copy, I get as far as to put my password in, and windows will not boot up, the only way I can get in to the computer is in to the safety mode, these are the fllowing problems:

    (1) for some reason, the white bar that the task bar rides on has
moved up 2 inchs, and ever thing on top of the screen repetes below
it, also, 2 inchs on the right of the screen is none viewable, making
my screen size smaller.... I can live with this probllem, if
needed to, in need to correct number 3 problem first... like to
know how to correct this problem

    (2) I am have problems with my
    ["8" "i" "k" and "," ] keys,
some times they work, and most of the time they dont.... I can live
with this probllem, if needed to, in need to correct number 3 problem
first... like to know how to correct this problem

    (3) someone has attempted to correct number 1 problem, and, do not
know what he changed, and now, Windows will not boot up, the only way
that I can get in to the computer, is by going in to the safty mode
    (f8)
can you please tell me how to set, the setting, so that Windows will
boot up, I cannot restore to the old settings...

It sounds like you have a video problem
    Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel
    Double click the System icon
In the System Properties locate the Device Manager
    Expand the Display adapter listing
Right click on ALL display adapters listed & on the menu click Uninstall
Don't let it restart until all are uninstalled
    try restarting it normally
[The vidio adapter will be detected as "new" hardware & reinstalled.]

Unfortunately, there is no place where you can legally download a copy of Windows 2000. However, I just checked EBay and there are dozens of Win2000 CDs for sale as low as $5 US. It would appear (from the description of your problems) that you need to replace the keyboard. But it could be that there's a problem with the NumLock and/or the Fn key, since they can control the 'secondary' numbers/letters on the keys you mentioned. For the video problem, follow fairjoeblue's steps above (in safe mode of course) and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help, what you have provided me, did help to bring Windows 2000 NT back in working order.....

but, did not correct the other two problems, which are:

    (1) I am have problems with my
    ["8" "i" "k" and "," ] keys,
some times they work, and most of the time they dont....

    (2) for some reason, the white bar that the task bar rides on has
moved up 2 inchs, and ever thing on top of the screen repetes below
it, also, 2 inchs on the right of the screen is none viewable, making
    my screen size smaller....

This sounds like the screen is malfunctioning, meaning that this is a hardware problem, and not likely to be a software problem. However, you can try to change the resolution: right click a blank area any place on the desktop and select Properties; click the Settings tab and you'll see the slider for the screen resolution. Slide it left or right and click Apply. If this doesn't help, maybe the refresh rate can be changed to fix the problem (unlikely since it is probably locked at 60hz like most laptops, and changing the refresh rate probably wouldn't fix a problem like this anyway). To access refresh rate settings: go to the Settings tab as described, click the Advanced button; click the Monitor tab. If the refresh rate isn't locked, you can access other settings from the drop down menu.... but, like I said, I think it's pretty safe to say that it's a hardware problem, and LCD repairs are not really cost effective with older laptops like the CPx.

It's always worth looking for a ribbon cable that is trapped or has come partly loose.

As far as the keyboard problem, turn the laptop partly open on it's side and blow the keyboard with canned air - especially around the keys that act up, the num lock key and the function keys.

When you say the keys sometimes work and sometimes don't, describe what happens when the 8 key isn't working.
