    Hey guys,
I have a Compaq Presario laptop with 80GB HDD and 1024MB RAM.. Would it be advisable if i wanted to stick another Chip in it... maybe another 512Mb or something... What would the effects be.. would this work?

    Thanx guys

Depends if it is DDR and if so, how many sticks are currently inside and if slots are available. DDR works best when ram is placed in two's. So, if you had 2 512 sticks, you would want 2 more 512 sticks. 1, by itself, would help, but not at peak performance if it is DDR ram. Im lazy, I usually take it to a CompUSA or BestBuy and they slap it right in for you :)

As for effects or improvement, 1 gig is plenty for XP with most people. If you heavily multi task and do a lot of graphic or movie editing, more ram would be nice. I run 2 gigs because I do have a lot of programs open constantly. That said, I have run 1 gig and done what I needed no problem except a few intense games.

If your machine is running slow, you might be able to get better performance by doing some clean up, if you have not already. Not sure what your issue is, so sorry if this is something you knew about:

As M.A. replied, most users can get by on 1 gig.
I have 2 gigs in my Toshiba Tecra A7 laptop but it is never used.
I am not a power user and most of the time, the extra gig just sits there un-used.
1 gig would be enough for me.

I installed an extra gig, at the time, because I thought it might help my duo-core run better, it didn't. :p Bazza
