Launch Command Prompt as administrator and enter the command:
    Code:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Let me know if things are any better once it completes.

Did that this afternoon. It didn't find any problems. Then ran sfc command after that or something like that. Not any better.

How long has this been going on...and have you tried a system restore to before it began?

  5. trisha

    trisha Corporal

Not my computer so I don't know how long. When she gave it to me to fix I found she hadn't installed any updates since October last year. I applied the updates including the fall upgrade. That did help somewhat because there wasn't so much going on in the background.

Just checked. There is only one restore point and that was created on the 10th of this month since I have been working on the computer.

Sfc. System file checker. I ran command prompt as administrator and entered sfc /scannow It said there was nothing wrong with the files. Think it said there was nothing wrong with file integrity. I will run the utility you suggested. Thanks Eldon

I was confused by 'Then ran sfc command after that or something like that.'
No need to run the utility.

You should look at the Starup Items and Services in Task Manager.

I already ran the utility. Attached the log file. Also attached a screen shot of the start up window in task manager. I had already disabled as many startups as I thought were safe. Thanks for your help.

Give us details on parts please..

use speccy as a copy and past.

If there was only one restore point created on the 10th of this month.Than most likely the cause is a recent windows 10 update.

I'm not sure about those Startup Items as their impact has not been measured.
In Task manager also look at Processes - CPU and Memory.
And do give us the specs as requested in post #11.

Those start up items should have no effect on speed.

Some users do. That's why the utility has been downloaded 1700+ times.

If you're on a hard drive and not on SSD.With the hard drive do a disk defrag.

Like in post #11 if you are reigstered as a windows insider updater. Some of those updates will make windows 10 run slow and slow response times.

Can you give us an approximate indication of what you mean by this? Slow can be a relative term if your own computer boots quickly - say in 20 seconds or so. If this laptop is taking say a couple of minutes or more to get to the desktop there are things we can ask you to look at.

Restart is ridiculous. First off I would take a close look at event viewer for the time restart was initiated. Run eventvwr.msc

I would try this below. To see if this helps.

Launch the Command Prompt as Administrator.

Than type chkdsk /f it will ask you a question.Type Y for yes and enter then reboot.

The “/f” parameter tells CHKDSK to fix any errors it finds.

You might have to run this option in safe mode.

Use the “Shift + Restart” combination. Another way of getting into Safe Mode in Windows 10 is to use the Shift + Restart combination. Open the Start menu and click or tap on the Power button. Then, while keeping the Shift key pressed, click or tap on Restart.

Just run the check disk in command prompt just type chkdsk.

Go to your search bar and type in cmd....when the command window pops up in the results, right click it and run as admin....then do the chkdsk.

It's important to accurately note the time in the system tray when you hit Restart, and to look for errors that started at that time. This does require some patience but if you can find such errors give us a screenshot. Something else you can try is to restart with any peripherals unplugged and Bluetooth turned off.

Ran chkdsk from within windows by going to file explorer>this pc>c drive>properties>tools>error checking. Is this the same thing as chkdsk?

Will try again and make note of time of restart in system tray. No peripherals have been connected and Bluetooth has not been connected.

The restart time was 3:55 p.m. It took 3 minutes and change to restart this time. Maybe defragging the drive helped with that? I have attached screen shots of some of the errors that showed up during restart.

    You need to do this.
Ensure the columns CPU, Working Set (Memory) & Peak Working Set (Memory) are selected one at a time. Take screenshots and upload them.

Hi Eldon. I attached a screen shot of my task manager. I can't find what you are referring to.

Looking at your event viewer screenshots can you try temporarily disabling the iTunes Helper in Start-up in Task Manager and restarting? If it doesn't make any difference then re-enable it.

When was the last time the system was cleaned up? And when was the last time it was checked for malware and viruses? All of these can slow a computer down a lot.

Also, if there are a lot of programs running in the background, that don't need to be, that will add to it. Then there is the browser cache, history and cookies. Those can add up really fast.

Cleaning up all that should help.

If none of this does it, the only other thing I can think is that the hard drive may need to be checked for problems.

Click the CPU tab - the highest value should be at the top.
Do the same with the RAM tab.

Yep, this did the trick. I also updated the drivers using their program. After all the tweaks are finished the computer is rebooting at 55 sec and cold boot 44 sec. I'm going to suggest my friend buy this program. I might just buy it for my computer as well. Thanks for all your help.

Ran Advanced System Care as someone else suggested and all seems much better now. In answer to your question regarding malware, I went to Malware forum first and my logs were clean. Tim suggested I come here after that.

Does this mean anything? It is what is showing in Advanced System Care. No programs are being used.
