My laptop has been sitting there collecting dust, waiting for me to buy it a new hard drive since the old one has crapped out on me. Now I finally buy a hard drive for it and I have reinstalled windows and now my screen size is half the size of the screen and my fan shuts off after about 5 mins and it starts getting hot so I shut it down afraid of over heating it. Any suggestions?

Make of laptop please? I had a similar issue with a Dell which was resolved by pressing the Fn & F7 keys simultaneously as the laptop was booting.

If you are worried about the overheating get yourself a laptop cooler which is like a tray that sits under your laptop and which has a couple of fans drawing hot air away.

    Good Luck

I have an hp pavilion ze4240. I don't see any options on here for change display size and position. Maybe I'm missing something here.

Well I don't want to have to set it on a tray. I want my laptop to be mobile. If I need to buy a new fan I'll do that. But it's odd how it runs for a few minutes then stops. I thought maybe it had temp control so it doesn't use up the battery when it's not hot. But when I let it run it overheated and shut down. I don't think it would be the bearings in the fan, but I could be wrong. If that were the case I'd think that it would only run for a few seconds then stop, or just keep running and overheat the cpu with a lot of friction generating heat. I'm kind of rambling here but I just have no clue what could be causing it and don't want to spend the money on a fan and risk opening up my computer to replace it if I don't have to.

The fan (assuming you only have one and it is on the cpu) will not stay on continuously. It will come on when the cpu gets above a certain temp and then turn itself off.

Your thread is running blind to a certain extent since you do not know the temp at which the cpu fan is switching itself on/off ie you have no information as to how hot it is running.

In respect of the display being half size there must be a way to correct this. I am not familiar which HP's but as I said on my Dell whenever this happens (generally laptop been left off for a lengthy period) I simultaneously press the Fn & F7 keys on the keyboard.

    Good Luck

Did you get all your drivers and software for your laptop when you reinstalled the OS? Your screen problem sounds like a driver issue. Drivers and software: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=305881&
My laptop gets quite hot, also. They do tend to run hotter as there is less air circulation in them. Since it was gathering dust, you may want to clean it out to see if it helps.
