Laptop screen brightness fluctuates

Win xp sp2
Radeon IGP 345M
1024 X 768 true-color 32-bit 60Hz
ATI driver 6.14.10.6436
acceleration full (all the way to the right)

Only "effect" checked is clear type

Power scheme = portable/laptop
turn off monitor after 15 plugged in/5 battery

latest system bios installed

Problem:

My monitor screen brightness fluctuates as if there is an imbalance in power.

Like when the air conditioner kicks in and room lights dim temporarily. At first I checked to see if lights in the room were dimming as well - they were not.

Then I tried the unplugging and running on battery only -- still happens.

I will try removing battery and running only on plug.

I tried different resolution -- no change.

Happens regardless of program running: browser, email, dreamweaver, just desktop.

When I click settings-->advanced button I get a box with lots of tabs including OpenGL, Direct3D, Overlay, Adapter, Options...

I notice this box says across the top:
(Multiple monitors) and Radeon IGP 345M Properties

I am not using multiple monitors, but I cannot find a place to tell that to the puter. Maybe I am using the wrong driver; are there different drivers for single and multiple monitor configurations?

Any ideas out there that could help me?

 

Can't say what's causing the fluctuations in brightness, but if your laptop has a video or TV-out connector on the back, then you technically do have multiple monitors-- you just don't have one of them hooked up.
