    Hello all!
I am very new to this forum, and am not 100% sure this is the right section, but here goes:

I have a Presario 2200 laptop that I've had almost 3 years. About a year ago, my HD crashed, and I took it to be replaced. All seemed well, and I brought it home. But very shortly thereafter, I began having sound problems, but ONLY WITH streaming from internet sites......here's the odd thing: if I play a DVD or those times I've downloaded a TV episode from Amazon's Unbox, the sound works FINE. BUT.........if I go to a web site and want to watch a news clip, or see who got booted off Idol, then NO SOUND!!

I've searched the 'Net for helpful hints, and have checked Device Manager...there are NO conflicts. I've also tried downloading a newer sound driver, but with no change.

Does ANYONE here have any suggestions??? Does it sound like I need to look INSIDE the laptop to see if anything is loose??? Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome to Major Geeks! First off, your problem is NOT hardware related. If there was 'something loose' you would have no sound on anything, ever. But since the sound works for some things, but not others, it is a software issue. Now, I'm not an expert with streaming audio problems, but I can suggest a few things:
first: uninstall all Java Environment Updates by going to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. There may be several listed; remove them all. You don't need to restart the PC after each removal, but restart it when all the listed updates have been uninstalled. Download and install this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html Reboot the PC when finished.
second: Go back to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Adobe Flash Player and reboot the PC. Download and install this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5163 and restart the PC.
You didn't mention which browser you use, or which version of Windows you're running, so I'm assuming it's Internet Explorer and Windows XP. Go to a web site where you previously had sound issues and see if it's OK now after following the two step above. If so, great. If not, post again here, include which browser and the version of the browser you use, and which version of Windows and which service pack is installed.

    Good luck!

Please forgive me if this response shows up multiple times, but I have tried TWICE to get it to show up, and it hasn't, so I'm trying my 3rd and final time!!
Anyhow, dlb, I had to ask you a question, and here it is:

    =====================================
Thanks for the suggestions...I will try them. But let me ask you, in the Add/Remove section of CP, the ONLY reference I see about Java is the program that says: Java Runtime Environment and is 135 MB.....is THAT the one I should delete???

Also, most of the time I am in Firefox, and have the latest update version 2.0.0.14. Yes, I have XP................and I DO use IE at times, but not the majority.

..............Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention.....while I never get any sound from news clips anymore, last year, when I also had this problem, I could go to the MLB.com site and ACTUALLY HEAR live baseball broadcasts when I couldn't hear other stuff....this year I didn't renew, so don't know if I would still be able to do that....but the whole randomness of it is SO weird!!!

SO........do I UNINSTALL the 135 MB file that says Java Runtime Enviroment??? I don't see ANYTHING else that says Java....or would they have different names????

Sorry for so many question.....just want to be sure.......oh, I also set a restore point......just in case!!

Hmmm dont uninstall anything! Try just Googling Sun Java and DL the latest Java from thr....let it overwrite the other version. Ripping out Java seems a blunt edge approach imho.

FYI reason it may not show is that the over use of ......... in text will have the spam filter of the forum send the post to moderation for an admin to approve, so try to use less of them and post will show.. cheers.

Possible to your issue is a lack of a compatible codec for the online streams, install this and it may clear that issue up http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Codec_Package_d5326.html ( even though its name is Vista codec pack, it works with XP also )
